For the first time since she was a child, Syndee Goodberry was actually skipping instead of walking. She burst out of the Initiation Chambers with a great grin spread across her pretty face, almost plowing into an old witches imp familiar, before she heard her name being called from across the street.

Syndee my dear! Syndee! Adeline emerged from a small group of girls, waving at Syndee from under an old wooden sign that creaked slightly back and forth even though there was no wind.

Syndee rushed across the cobblestone street, trying in vain to dodge the bustling crowds of busy witches and familiars.

Outta my way, fresh meat! Syndee jolted to a stop as a hulking red demon thundered around her. She narrowly avoided slamming into him and spilling the huge stack of musty tomes he was carrying in enormous, muscular arms.

Tsk tsk, a snooty old witch scolded. Syndee assumed she was the demon’s master. Recruits these days... she muttered dismissively.

Syndee apologized quickly and dashed forward again, right into the path of an oncoming carriage being pulled by summoned beasts of burden. Blue flames licked across the animals’ bodies - the unburning flames telltale signs of a summoned being - as they reared high into the air, jolting the carriage behind them to a sudden stop. Syndee could hear the inhabitants inside yelling in confusion and anger. She didn’t want to be around to see who was inside.
