About this ebook

We are all living separate experiences, yet many of us have the same feelings, the exact same lusts for dominance. The lust for power is the underlying element of who we really are and how we behave; and even believe ourselves to be. What if we were to discover that there is no loop out of that lust?

Candy Rules: Coming Out is not only the story of how one woman struggles with abounding energy, but it is about her acceptance of her physical and mental ability to dominate others while obtaining self-actualization. The protagonist is a woman who transcends standard morality, compelling any reader who has experienced this selfsame lust for dominance, anxiety about the future, or confusion about the present to identify with her.

Candy Rules: Coming Out is a quintessential post modern novel about a woman obsessed with power at any cost. Throughout the novel, the female protagonist cannot see the self in the present, since all of her decisions are based on satiating the deamon within. Each chapter drives Candy deeper into a world of no escape as she uses her sex, strength, and guile in triumph after triumph to feed her consuming ego. The novel tells a tale from the perspective of multiple characters to a climactic ending that no reader will soon forget.

    Candy Rules: Coming Out

    Chapter 1

    Atlanta, 1969

The scream brought Candy Evans running. Miko Johnson and Ginny Perkins struggled in the street. She knew both from Grove Park High School. Miko was on the football team and Ginny played last year on the girls basketball team.

Candy looked on in horror as Miko swung hard hitting Ginny solidly in the face. He continued to hold her and brought his arm back to slap her across the face when Candy launched her body and landed on that arm. She landed in a cloud of dust when he flung her to the pavement and returned his attention to Ginny. The screech of tires, the slamming of doors, Earl Cole and Billy Williams rushed to the struggle.

What’s going on, Miko? said Earl. Are you crazy?

Miko turned toward Earl while Ginny Perkins slithered over and dropped quivering into the grass at the side of the road, her battered face already starting to swell, her ripped blouse exposing a piece of her bra.

I’m teaching this whore a lesson. Nobody ditches me like I’m a piece of shit. Miko staggered towards Earl stabbing at him with his index finger.

You’re not teaching anything to anybody. You’re drunk, Miko. Gimme your keys. Earl held out his palm.

Fuck you, Earl. Not givin my keys to nobody. And I’m not finished with this cunt. He whirled and staggered towards Ginny. She screamed. Earl caught his shoulder. Miko turned and swung. Earl deflected the blow, stepped in, and nailed him right in the jaw. Miko dropped to the pavement like a sack of sand, unconscious.

Billy, drag him into my car and get his keys. Follow me in his car to his house.

Wait a minute, said Candy, who called over from tending Ginny on the grass. I’m not sure the police shouldn’t be called here. He really hit Ginny, and I don’t think he should be running around loose.

Look, said Earl, walking over to them. You’re Candy Evans, aren’t you?

    Yeah.

Hi. He smiled. She continued to look at him coldly. We can’t sic the police on Miko because he’s the center on the football team, and we’re going to need him in our next game against Carlyle.

Football, shmootball, This guy needs to be taken off the streets. Look at Ginny’s eye.

Come on? How about it, Ginny? You don’t want Miko to go to jail, do you? Look, I promise he’ll pay for this, and I also promise he’ll never bother you again. How’s that?

Well, I guess so, but you tell that motherfucker if he touches me again my daddy’s going to kill him. I told him, Earl, I told him I don’t want to see him anymore, but he won’t listen.

He’ll listen now, Ginny, I promise you.

Ginny, are you sure you’re doing the right thing? I mean, I saw him hit you, and he really let you have it, said Candy, eyes flaring, shaking her head in disgust.

It’ll be all right. He was just drunk, said Ginny.

Okay, that settles it, said Earl.

Wait a minute, said Candy, Ginny wasn’t the only one hurt here. I scraped my hand on the pavement when he flung me down. She held out hand for all to see.

Earl took her hand and looked at it then lifted his gaze back up into her eyes displaying a slight twinkle. Come on, Candy, you’re not going to let a little scratch like this put someone in jail and cause us to lose to Carlyle, are you? He smiled and nodded roguishly.

Candy felt the warmth and stimulation of his hand as he still held hers. After all, this was Earl Cole, super-stud at school and star fullback on the football team.

    * * *

The blood still raced through Candy’s veins as she entered the party at Alice James’ house. When Alice invited her, Candy’s heart filled with anticipation. She had to get out of the rut she had been in. She was starting out in a new grade in school and this year was going to be different. Last year, socially, she had been an outcast. That is, she had been a nevercast. She hadn’t been noticed enough for anyone to outcast her. This year she was ready to make her mark. A clawing want urged her to expand her opportunities and move toward getting some kind of life. Tonight, party time! She primed for action. Christ! Whatever happened to romance and excitement?

As soon as she hit the door, she looked around and scanned one after the other of all the nobodies and losers who filled the room. Jesus H, she felt like someone threw a glass of ice water in her face. Her high feeling drained leaving despair. She found herself back in the former mundane world she swore she was leaving behind.

She sighed, and smirked at the ceiling. Why me, God? Why? Fucking? Me? Alice waved from one of the chairs surrounding the dance floor. Giving up the chance of anything happening, Candy relegated herself to another boring evening.

Got down and couldn’t get up! Candy gestured around at the room. Is this the best you could come up with, Alice? Just where in hell are all the hot hunks you said were coming?

Now hold on, Candy, they all promised to come. I can’t help it if none of em showed. Where’ve you been, anyway? I know you like to make a late entrance, but this is way past your usual time.

You’re not going to believe it. On my way over here, Miko Johnson assaulted Ginny Perkins right out there in the street.

    You’re kidding?

No, I’m not. He hit her in the face with his fist. Lucky I came along and stopped it. Earl Cole and I, that is.

"Earl Cole, blood drained from Alice’s face, you’re kidding?"

"No, I’m not. I wanted to call the police, but he talked Ginny and me out of it. Said he needed Miko for the team."

    "Earl Cole, you’re kidding?"

Look around, Alice. This party stands in line with Bible school as the most boring event of the year. You promised excitement. She gestured with her upturned hands at the room. This sucks!

I’m sorry. Anyway, where else could you be?

I could be home in bed having more fun that this. Look at all these dweerbs and dweebs we have coming out our ears.

    Why didn’t you bring David?

David, yeah, sure. He went to church. Besides, I’m about ready to give that boy his walking papers. He’s really starting to, like, make my skin crawl.

I don’t know why you complain about him, he drives a new car, and he’s got money.

Well let me see? She put her index finger up to her lips and focused hard on her answer. He’s tall and skinny. His ears are too big, face too splotchy. God left him totally out when he passed out personalities. His idea of a good time is going over to the church and, like, doing some big-time praying. He’s boring, boring, boring. Here, Alice, read my lips, Candy leaned over moved her face into Alice’s, boooring. Got it?

    I guess.

Candy looked around the room again and smiled, shaking her head from side to side. Born to lose, goddamnit, I’m born to fucking lose. Oh Christ, get hold of yourself. That’s not the way to think. She forced herself to kick that thought out of her mind. Born to win, that’s a better thought. Someday she’d break through, someday she’d live the life she knew destiny intended for her.

Her eyes flashed by the doorway then instantly returned and locked on the frame. Standing within, none other than Earl Cole! Her blood pressure soared. She sat up and crossed her legs at the knees, wondering if she could risk a quick peek in her mirror.

A murmur buzzed its way through the room as the girls recognized him standing with several of his teammates. His eyes roamed the room, surveying the action as he listened to Billy, the boy next to him. His brown eyes met Candy's and she felt faint for a slight moment. When he started her way, her faintness surged to exhilaration. He came toward her jauntily, bearing an air of confidence without being too cocky, his jet-black hair parted on the left.

Hello again, Good Samaritan. Still want to call the fuzz on Miko? He stood in front of her, leering down with that roguish grin.

Yes I do, but I bowed to your and Ginny’s wishes. What's a big senior football hero like you doing here with all us peons? His deep brown eyes danced with the promise excitement.

I came with Billy. He motioned toward the boy still near the door. He wanted to see Patsy over there. He threw his hand toward a small brunette on the other side of the room pretending to ignore Billy. How bout a dance?

Why not? Her heart exploded. An animal, sexual magnet drew her to him.

I've seen you around, Candy, and I’m glad to get this chance to meet you, he said into her ear as they shuffled to the beat of an old ballad.

Thank you, Earl. Her head swam with the smell of his musky cologne. She raised her eyes to meet his. She projected a twinkle in them and hoped it found its way up to his. I can say the same thing about you. So could almost every girl in school.

You’ve got a lot of spunk. That, I like. I know many boys who would like to be here looking into the prettiest blue eyes in Grove Park.

I'll give you about three years to stop that. They both laughed.

I've seen you with David Wall. Where is he tonight?

Oh, he's in Bible class. She smirked and raised her gaze toward the ceiling. This is his night to get close with the Lord.

I see. Are you serious with him?

Candy laughed. No, Earl, I’m not serious.

That's good. He pulled her closer. She thrilled at the feel of his tall muscular frame. She felt all warm inside.

Let me ask you a question. What about you and Elsie Stanton? She watched his eyes, praying he would answer in a like manner.

Same answer. She sighed with relief, feeling giddy.

We sound like two peas in a pod. She could barely control her glee.

Yes, we do. Listen, fellow pea, why don't you join Billy, Patsy, and me? We're going up to the Varsity a little later.

Sounds great. Only you have to have me home by eleven. All us peas, especially the sweet peas, have to be back in the valley by eleven. Orders of the Jolly Green Giant.

Now do I look like the kind of guy who’d mess around with the Jolly Green Giant? He made a face of mock concern and whirled her around the dance floor, her head glided in the clouds.

As she sat next to Earl in his souped-up Oldsmobile roaring up Bankhead Highway Candy’s face flashed triumphant. A thrill like no other zinged through her veins. This was more like it. She relished the moment as excitement swirled all around her. Being with Earl aroused her like nothing else. He emanated a recklessness that tantalized her, a recklessness in which she felt safe because Earl was like no other. He was special and that made her special just being with him. She searched the streets and sidewalks in vain. Someone, anyone, had to spot her. She wanted to be seen with Earl.

Candy's back jerked against the seat from force as Earl hit second gear and shot past a lingering motorist. A spark went through her when his hand brushed against her leg. He left it there for a moment and then moved it farther onto her leg and squeezed it gently. She regretted him moving it when another slow car required him to pop second once again.

Earl asked for his favorite carhop at the Varsity, a black man named Flossy Mae. They parked around in Snellville, a favorite gathering place in the large drive-in for the Grove Parkians. The group enjoyed bantering back and forth with the ostentatious carhop. He wore oversized clothes and his special trademark, a large, bright, floppy hat. He went through his bit in a loud and dramatic way naming off all the items on the menu from memory. He rolled his eyes. He laughed and he danced. They were in stitches by the time he left with their orders.

After eating, they drove back toward Grove Park, stopping at Maddox Park. Maddox Park had the closest public swimming pool to the community of Grove Park. The young people of the area flocked to it in the summer months. Year-round it functioned as lover's lane. Earl pulled behind a small knoll blocking them from view. Patsy and Billy started making out in the back seat. Earl slid toward Candy from underneath the steering wheel. The moment had arrived, the culmination of all those bedtime dreams.

She found herself in his arms with his lips on hers, searching, and giving. The feel of his strong arms around her made her swoon. She marveled at the hardness of the muscles on his back. It felt so good. She wanted to give herself to him, but knew she had to hold out. Could she hold him off if he tried? Want blazed in her loins. It screamed at her, demanding it. How could she hold out? Somehow, someway, she knew she had to. To bind him to her, he must not think of her as easy or fast. She was virgin. Earl would be the first, but they had to go through the rituals. She had here a man, a real man, and a man worthy of her. She planned to keep him.

    * * *

Earl couldn’t believe his luck. Life was certainly full of delicious surprises. This new girl was beyond anything he’d ever run into. Oh, he had his share of the ladies, more than his share. He plucked from the pick of the crop, and many a girl went home despoiled after frolicking in the back seat of his Olds. He had them all, but this Candy was different, special.

As no other had, she excited him. The vibrancy and forcefulness she showed matched his own. She promised to be fun. Her beauty topped everything, God, her startling blue eyes knocked him for a loop. Once past them her sandy blond hair and her figure continued to entrance him. Here blossomed a magnificent beauty, and he was staking his claim on her, early on, while the getting was good."

He speculated if she still had her virginity intact, and guessed she did. He smirked. Going all the way with David Wall was a joke, and he hadn’t seen her with anyone else. Taking a virgin always gave him a special thrill, but this would be his greatest triumph. Candy was a nice girl. He would have to wait. That would make the cheese even that much more binding.

After dropping Patsy and Billy off, they parked in front of Candy's house where she lived with her mother. I'd like to see you again. Will you go out with me Saturday night?

I'd love to. I had a wonderful time, Earl. Visions of sugarplums raced in his head.

So did I. I'll pick you up at seven. They kissed again and she ran inside.

    Chapter 2

The woods near Candice Evans' home rendered the solitude she so desperately craved. There she unleashed her thoughts, the secret yearnings that thrust their way into her imagination and absorbed her.

The September sun warmed her through and through. It coaxed her feet to be bare and that she wear shorts. A slight warm breeze rustled the Georgia pines and caressed her bare legs, massaging them sensuously. She walked down the path leading to Proctor Creek. The air brought the dry smell of autumn to her nose.

On top of Earl’s superb athletic ability and glimmering personality, he offered Candy social prestige she couldn't buy. This was vitally important. She tried out for the majorettes and had been accepted. That was a kick and would bring notoriety. And now going with Earl would open many doors she would not have access to otherwise, doors the insides of which, she craved to explore.

Social acceptance had always been the one blemish that soiled her life. As long as she could remember, an invisible wall stood between her and the top rung of Grove Park society. She and her mother were poor, not dirt poor, but poor enough. She didn't blame her mother, for she did the best she could, working as a cashier for a new car dealership in Buckhead. Her father died in the Korean War. They didn't have the nice home, nice car, and nice clothes that others had. Because of this, at church, and at high school, she always felt somehow unclean around these socially elite people. It was like she had a smudge on her face.

Though everyone treated her with kindness and respect, a point existed into their lives beyond which she could not penetrate. She resented this ostracism, this patronage. She hated a society that encouraged exclusion. She felt as good as anyone, better than most. She had beauty, intelligence, a sparkling personality, but still, but still... Anyway that shit was over. She was a sophomore now. She would expand her opportunities.

    * * *

Candy grimaced as she walked down the hallway after her third-period history class on her way to the lunchroom, David Wall waited by her locker. The moment Candy dreaded had come. She had little actual feeling for David. Being with him always gritted something distasteful. And yet he treated her well and when she needed him he responded. At first, David Wall seemed like a good catch. After all his father owned the Grove Park Drugstore at the bottom of the hill from Grove Park High School on Bankhead Highway. Candy's hedonistic needs craved for more than what David Wall could provide her. Even if Earl had not come along, money or no money, she longed to dump him. She stepped around him and worked the combination to her locker.

Hello, Candy. Boy, did you miss a good Bible class last night. I was hoping you would change your mind and come.

I went to the party at Alice James’s, Candy flung this over her shoulder, finding it difficult to hide her irritation.

    Oh, anything exciting happen?

She opened her locker and tossed her social science book in, slammed the door shut, locked it, and then turned toward the boy and leveled her eyes at him. Yes, it did. You'll never guess who showed up. Blood surged within her. In spite of herself, she found herself enjoying this.

Who? He looked wary as he caught Candy’s elation.

    Earl Cole.

David looked like the two words slapped him in the face. Mr. Touchdown?

    The one and only.

Did he bring his football with him?

No, and he wasn't carrying a Bible either. How dare he attempt to put down Earl Cole?

I'm sorry. Fear penetrated his eyes as he backed off. She resented his retreat. She craved to get into it with him.

Look, David, we hit it off. No use waiting any longer. Might as well smack him in the face with it. "We went up to the Varsity.
