Parker

Turning her life into a war zone wasn't part of the plan.

And she seemed like she could handle herself.

But from the first hot taste, I was hooked.

And keeping my hands to myself was no longer an option.

That first kiss set us both on fire.

It gave life to the molten core of my lust…

And there's no stopping it now.

But someone is trying to run us down.

He wants us dead and gone.

But if he thinks I'm letting him take her away from me, he'd better think again.

Because the girl is mine.

And nothing – not death, not war, not a bloodthirsty rival with a death wish – will take her from me.

Jillian

Falling for him might have been a fatal mistake.

But I couldn't help myself.

No matter how hard my rational brain screamed at me to stay far away from Parker and the Dirty Riders MC…

My body just wouldn't let me run.

How could I?

His kiss brings me life.

But his enemies might bring us death.

The man on our trail is determined to kill us or die trying.

He's a broken monster, shattered by a tragic past.

But he doesn't want our pity.

He wants our blood.

And I'm powerless to stop him.

The only thing I can do is hold onto the biker who swept me off my feet…

And pray that he'll do the right thing in the end.

Lost interest about 20 pages in during the first actual steamy scene. It just lacked buildup and a fluidity that is necessary to keep my interest. I like the characters alright but not well enough to put up with the weak writing.

Chapter 1

L eave your jacket in the car, Jillian said as they rolled to a stop in Willamette Aldi’s drive.

Why? Parker asked.

Because it makes you look like a biker.

I am a biker.

Okay, it makes you look like a scary biker. She’s scared enough as it is.

He frowned as he stepped out of the car, but removed the jacket and tossed it into the car. He felt naked without it, but if it helped Lanie.

Thanks, Jillian said and smiled. Removing the leather did something to him. It made him look a little less intimidating, whereas the jacket and the same stubble gave him a no fucks given vibe.

Ms. Aldi opened the door before they even stepped onto the porch. Come in, she said, holding the door open and stepping back to allow them to enter. They stepped into a world of crocheted chair arm covers, pictures of family, and hundreds, if not thousands, of tiny thimbles, all neatly arranged in holders that covered the walls. In the corner was a large red bird sitting on an open perch, a Macaw or Parrot of some kind.

Can I get you anything? Ms. Aldi asked as she closed the door.

Hello! The bird squawked. Hello!

That’s Marvin, she added.

Hello!

He won’t shut up until you say hello back.

Hello!

Jillian grinned. Hello!

Pretty bird!

You’re a very pretty bird.

Would you like something to drink? Ms. Aldi asked again as Marvin squawked, making a sound that sounded like a weird laugh.

Tea!

Jillian grinned. Sure. Tea will be fine.

Marvin, you hush, Ms. Aldi scolded as she moved into the kitchen.

What kind of bird is Marvin? Parker asked as he moved for a closer look.

He’s a Scarlett Macaw, she called from the kitchen. He’s a lot of company, but be careful. He bites. He especially likes fingers.

You bite me, and you’ll be dinner, Parker muttered, too low for the old lady to hear.

Pretty bird! When Marvin tipped his head to the side, as if looking for a tasty spot, Parker took a step back, the beak looking uncomfortably powerful.

When Ms. Aldi returned with a tray of three tall glasses of tea sitting on it, Jillian smiled and took two of the glasses, handing one to Parker. You said you wanted to talk to me about your car? Jillian prompted to get the ball rolling. I’m going to record this, so I don’t forget anything, okay?

Ms. Aldi sat down with a sigh. She had to be at least eighty, her back bent by the years and her hair as white as fresh snow. She might look frail, but she moved with sure, bird-like movements. She pushed her glasses up and looked at them for a moment. That’s fine. The man who bought my car... I don’t like him. He scares me.

What do you mean?

Just what I said. He told me when he bought the car if anyone came around asking about it, to tell them it didn’t run anymore, that I sold it to a junkyard, and that it was crushed. He also said to tell people I sold it at least five years ago, but it was actually less than a year.

Why is that, do you think? Why didn’t you tell me this before? Jillian asked.

Because I don’t want trouble, but I got to thinking about what you said and... She shrugged. I don’t know why he wanted me to say those things. He didn’t say, but he must have his reasons. I didn’t ask because, like I said, he scares me. I wish I hadn’t sold the car to him now, but I was afraid not to after he showed up.

You said it was red? Did it have a white top as well? Jillian asked.

Yes.

Hello!

Jillian looked at Parker. This entire thing sounds fishy to me, he said. There is more going on here than some weirdo buying the car and not changing the title over. In fact, if it was less than a year ago, why wasn’t it on Finn’s list listed under her name?

Hello!

Hello, Marvin, Ms. Aldi said to quiet down the bird. You think it was my car that ran over your sister?

The car I saw was a 1959 Cadillac, red with a white roof.

She sagged back in her chair. If it was my car, I’m very sorry young man.

He forced a smile. It’s not the car’s fault, and you weren’t driving it. Did the car run okay?

She shrugged again. It ran fine I guess. It always started when I wanted to drive it somewhere.

Do you remember the name of the man who bought it?

Not exactly. It sounded like the actor who played Kojak, Telly Savalas, but it wasn’t quite it. I’ve been trying to remember what it was, but my mind isn’t what it used to be.

What did he look like? Jillian asked.

Pretty bird! Tea!

Marvin, hush! Ms. Aldi scolded. He was tall. Dark, like you, she said, nodding at Parker. "Older than you, maybe fifty? His hair was
