Introduction
There are moments in life that we cherish, small seconds of bliss spent snuggling with our precious children. Mommy, tell me a story.
Daddy, can I have a bedtime story?
These requests offer time to pause from our hectic everyday routine, a chance to share an adventure together.
My wife and I have read to our son from the time he would listen and encouraged him to read from the moment he began recognizing letters. From The Very Hungry Caterpillar
to The Chronicles of Narnia
we have read one book or gone through a series of chapters each night.
However, we have discovered that most books are not designed or written for bedtime. Sometimes a chapter takes half an hour to read through. Sometimes one of us would fall asleep part way through, and not necessarily our son! Sometimes, a chapter was too short, or too boring, or so full of detail that it was difficult to get through.
I created this story as a brand new adventure, told in a serial fashion, so that your child is captivated throughout the entire tale. Each episode ends in a cliffhanger to help build excitement for the next installment. Whether you are reading before bed, during the day, on a long car trip, or while standing in the grocery checkout line, these stories are quick and customizable for your storytelling needs.
You, of course, are the storyteller and you know best what your audience will most enjoy. If you want to read two or three episodes at a time, then feel free to do so.
If at any point you become tired of simply reading the text as written, feel the need to add lib and insert your own characters or ideas.
Just remember, story time with your children is about having fun and making memories. You are well on your way to making some memories they’ll never forget.

Shirlee’s Revenge

Episode 1
Big’s tail waived through the air as his Person sliced the cheese on the counter-top. The marbled yellow-white chunks fell on the surface with a plop. The drool from Big’s mouth drizzled and plipped to the floor, as he tasted the cheese in his mind. He spied Little crouched behind the doorway from the dining room leading into the kitchen. He winked at her and she nodded her head.
The Person finished slicing the cheese and turned toward the fridge. Little mouthed toward Big, NOW!
He raced to the counter, making sure to be fast but also quiet. Little did the same. When he reached the counter, Big stretched his front paws as far up the kitchen counter as they would go and Little climbed up his back, her head barely reaching the top. Once she was up, she could see the cheese tantalizing her, looking more lovely than ever. Little reached forward and scooped up just two slices into her mouth. Her brain screamed at her to eat it all, but she thought of Big and stopped herself from devouring the lot.
The two pieces of gooey delicious cheese balanced in her mouth, she did a perfect somersault off Big’s arched back, exactly like Bjorn - her feline friend from previous adventures in a land of gnomes, fighting pizza crusts, and princesses – had taught her. She landed on the floor with only the slightest of clicks from her nails touching the linoleum.
Jack Jenkins, also known to Big and Little as their Person, scratched his head in confusion. He had been making a grilled cheese sandwich, and had turned to get some butter from the fridge when he heard the soft clicking to his left. That small sound was enough for him to turn and look. What a strange sight! There were his dogs, one stretched up on the counter like he was about to climb up and the other staring wide eyed with two pieces of cheese in her mouth. What do you two think you’re doing?!?
he exclaimed.
Big and Little knew that sticking around was not a good idea. They bolted for the doggy door and raced to their secret hiding place in the back yard.
Whew, that was close. Do you think we’ll be in trouble?
Big asked Little.
Little plopped the two pieces of cheese on a bed of dry leaves and said, No, he won’t stay mad. But maybe we should go back to begging for cheese from now on.
Little took a bite of her cheese and lay down with a happy look on her face.
Big nosed his cheese around for a time but wasn’t eating. Little took notice and asked, What’s wrong? It’s not like you to leave cheese uneaten. I’m surprised you haven’t eaten the other half of mine as well.
Big looked over at Little, and she could see on his face that he was slowly forming the right words. This must be important,
she thought.
Little, I miss our adventures. Begging is fine and all, but it was great using our abilities to earn the cheese we wanted. Maybe we could sneak back to The Magical Land sometime and find some adventure. Don’t you miss it?
Little nodded slowly, Big, we had some good times, some scary times too, and it was fun having adventures. Our Person needs us though, and you can’t just go around having adventures all the time.
Why not? Don’t you want to have adventures?
Big asked as he ate the whole piece of cheese in one bite.
Of course I do, but I also like cuddling on the couch and playing in the back yard,
Little responded, perplexed. Where did this all come from anyway?
Big started to answer, but then they heard a strangled cry of distress from the kitchen, and it sounded like their Person.
They raced to the kitchen and burst through the doggy door. Skidding to a stop, what they saw froze their hearts.
Episode 2
Minutes before, Big and Little had scurried out the doggy door with their precious cheese, and Jack Jenkins shook his head, Those rascals. What am I going to do with them?
He remembered the butter and turned toward the fridge again. He stopped short. Before him were the oddest assortment of living creatures he had ever seen. Standing, or whatever you call it, in front of him was an assortment of mushrooms with long pointy teeth, patches of moss with googly eyes, and a creepy looking, dirty, one armed Suzy Talks A Lot baby doll.
Jack’s brain was slowly processing when the doll spoke to him, Jack Jenkins, we are here to take you.
Jack had seen a few things in his day, but a man can only handle so much. He screamed, and not a manly roar of battle. The sound that came out of Jack’s mouth was a very frightened and rather girly scream. The doll pointed to Jack and yelled out, GET HIM!
The creeping moss and mushrooms leaped through the air and landed on different parts of Jack. The mushrooms bit
