    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Myrtle Aline Andrews was born in Middlesex, England. When she was three months old her parents move to Scotland. There she received a good all round education to Tertiary level. Holidays were spent in the south of England visiting relatives and also on the West Coast Islands of Scotland. Myrtle has also travelled within Europe, to South America, Borneo and Malaysia.

On arrival in Australia Myrtle became an Australian Citizen. She has lived mostly in Western Australia but has stayed for a while in Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania. Her career so far has encompassed farming, horticulture, computer science and education, the latter proving to be the most satisfying.

    AUTHOR’S NOTES

These stories were written for the enjoyment of children. To entertain; to stimulate their imagination; to encourage their natural curiosity, and to foster an interest in the written word.

The magic of stories began for me with the Fairy Tales that my parents often read aloud to me of an evening, or if ever I was ill in bed. Then there were stories broadcast over the radio. My first school teacher read to us too, then I discovered the joys or reading for myself. This has been a life-long passion, a source of delight and enlightenment for me and for my family.

Libraries are still important sources of books, as are book shops. Now that eBooks have arrived our access to the written word has been greatly widened as they offer an almost inexhaustible selection of a vast rage of reading material that parents and teachers can read to children until they too learn the pleasure of indulging in this pastime for themselves.

I wish my readers well. If these simple tales give pleasure to even one child they will have achieved their goal.

    Peter’s Perfect Rainbow

Peter was awakened by the early morning sunbeams slanting in through his bedroom window.

He sat up and looked around. His room was all rather strange and bare. There were none of his pictures on the wall; none of his toys were anywhere to be seen.

Getting out of bed, he looked out of the window. He watched the little blue Wrens flitting around chasing insects in the garden for a while then he went down towards the kitchen.

Passing through the hall he saw the travel bags piled against the wall. He wanted to open them just to see if his toys were still inside but then his mother called to him to come for his breakfast.

His little brother Ken was already sitting at the table in his high chair, eating his cereal. Ken was not yet two.

Peter’s mother put a bowl of cereal and glass of milk on the table for him as he sat down next to Ken.

You know what today is don’t you Peter? his mother asked.

Yes! It’s travel day! Peter said, with a proud smile. At six years of age Peter had found that it was always good to get the right answer to an adult’s question, it made them happy. Anyway he knew that this was the day they had been telling him about for ages. They were to leave his Nan’s house on the island and go to a new home that his Dad had found for them near his new job on the mainland.

That’s right! So you must eat your breakfast quickly and then go to the bathroom to wash and clean your teeth. I have put your clothes ready on your bedroom chair. I will help Ken get ready after I have washed the dishes, said his mother. The taxi will be here at nine so we must be ready.

    Peter was excited,
