DEDICATION
I wish to dedicate this portion of the book to my mother and her next-door neighbor Mary Brees, who was my second mother.
It was Mary that took jobs at school on the playground and in the cafeteria to keep an eye on her son Donnie and on me.
It was Mary who had us both meet at her feet after school and rehearse our spelling words and be taught how to read.
Years passed and she was always there. Whenever I needed someone to talk with or escape from my brothers, I could go to Mary’s for safety.
Mary believed that greatness could be achieved by both Donnie and me, too. We both graduated from universities with business Degrees. Donnie was the first to write his first book. He became a lecturer at universities and shared his education in that way when he wasn’t vacationing in Greece.
I raised my three babies to be wonderful children with minds capable of every modality. My eldest is a Pilot trainer, co-pilot for corporate jets, gardener, and cosmetologist. My son is a building contractor, a cad-draftsmen architect, a crew chief at the airport, and a creator of games. My youngest is an author of children’s books, a poet, a head gardener, and a survivalist. I raised them on a small farm to give them freedom from the elements and knowledge of the animal kingdom.
Acknowledgment
I would like to acknowledge school teachers and mothers who spend their time at home with their children teaching them about life and how to express their adventures on paper.
My baby daughter repeated the Pledge of Allegiance at three. She knew every color, and animal, and could read primers. She answered the phone as an adult and skipped a grade in school.
To those other mothers who Home School
their children, I give them applause for the many hours behind the scenes where they prepare the lessons approved by the school district and then teach the required concepts throughout the day. A six-hour weekday with free time for socialization with other families. The minds of the children can be opened to all good things, while no bullies cause mistreatment to any of them.
The concept is quite like our ancestors 150 years ago. The children worked all chores with their parents and learned as they grew to adults to be self-sufficient and industrious. They were not strangers to the Bible and its teachings. They loved the land and would fight for their freedom.

CHAPTER ONE: RAISING EXTRAORDINARY CHILDREN
Once upon a time in a land just like this one lived a small child, who loved her grandmother so very, very much. They played all day at home and her grandmother was always with her. They were like glue, stuck together at the hip.
As tiny footsteps are heard running upstairs with the lights off and the sun barely rising over the mountains, we hear laughter and giggles.
On this beautiful morning, Renee is being chased by her puppy up the stairs. Renee is having a fun time trying to outrace her puppy. As fast as she can get her little feet to carry her is not fast enough. The puppy caught her at the door of her bedroom and grabbed her ankle with its small puppy teeth. It was a fun challenge for the puppy, but it was painful for Renee.
She loudly yelled out an Ouch
and started to cry.
Her exclamatory shriek woke up her grandmother, who came flying out of bed, clinging to her robe with only one arm in it, charging towards Renee’s room.
What is wrong,
exclaimed Grandmother.
Grandmother didn’t like dogs, let alone puppies. She lunged for the puppy and slung it under her arm, holding it quiet.
She asked, Where does it hurt?
Renee was whimpering but the ankle only had scratches on it. She called for the maid to take the puppy outside.
A little hydrogen peroxide will fix you right up,
she promised.
Off they went to the bathroom for the cotton swabs and the brown bottle of hydrogen peroxide. Renee limped all the way there and sniffed as if she was in terrible pain trying to hide it. Grandmother wet the cotton swab and wiped the solution over the scratches.
There, you’ll be fine by mid-day,
grandmother comforted. How about we sit on the porch after breakfast and when you feel better you can play on the swings until lunch? Your ankle will be fine by then, OK?
Renee agreed, Uh-huh
and blew her nose one more time.
Out back in the big yard, there are two swing sets, one has a slide into the sandbox, and the other one has bars to swing on and a glider for two. In the summer there will be a small wading pool, bean-bag toss, jump rope games, and cement chalk for hop scotch.
All this yard needs are a big tree with a tire swing on it,
exclaims grandmother.
In the far corner is a big oversized dog house for that furry puppy named Bernie. Bernie is one of those puppies that you don’t need to wind up, he is full of energy. He will run to her, lick her face, then romp around the yard with so much energetic joy that Renee will just laugh and giggle.
Bernie runs back and forth across the green grass lawn, then in circles with a turnaround to find its tail and then a jump, always keeping his eye on Renee to see if she is watching, then he performs his final run back across the yard jumping up the two stairs then Renee’s lap with a leap, all the while wagging his tail in pure happiness. Renee would scream in fun and giggle as little girls do. She usually dives down on the soft grass and pets him until he licks her face a few more times.
Her grandmother would just sit in the old rocking chair on the porch and watch Renee play with the dog. When Renee is tired-out from playing, grandmother would call her over and ask her to climb up on her lap; then she will rock her to sleep in the big rocking chair while singing lullabies to her. Grandmother always smiles down at her while they rock. Renee feels loved and very safe.
Grandmother whispers softly, It is good to be home on these warm balmy days of spring. I love you, sweetie, you are a special child to me, Renee.
Then she leans down and gives her a big kiss on the forehead.
Renee smiles back and nods off to sleep.
In the winter they play upstairs in Renee’s large bedroom. It is filled with toys, games, a big doll house, and many storybooks that grandmother reads to her every night before she falls asleep.
At her window is a big window seat. It has pillows of every size. Some are soft and furry; others have bright red and green velvet stripes. Her favorite is a plaid one with lots of rainbow colors across it.
Renee loves to sit there and look out the window. There is a beautiful forest behind the house and outside the patio wall. She could almost see the river from
