A life long fan of romance novels, I decided to try my hand at one of my own. My first book, Don't Be Shy, started out as a short story that I thought would be fun to elaborate on. My initial attempts at publishing failed until I bought a Nook and found Smashwords Publishing. I hope you enjoy my secret passions. Please feel free to email me with any comments. All my best regards, Yanina wicked_writer@ymail.com

    Chapter 1

Anna stands over the stove, stirring the sauce as it cooks. Pouring in a little white wine, she begins stirring smoothly, tasting her concoction with a wooden spoon. Leaning over a large steaming pot, she gently checks the pasta, pulling a long string out and sucking it into her mouth. She hurried home, mindful of the argument they had last night. She did love him and she wanted to be a good wife. But is this what being a good wife was? She worked hard, long days to get her business off the ground. She wasn’t a housewife, barefoot and pregnant, keeping home and hearth just for her man. It wasn’t fair that he would accuse her of not being a good wife. Damn him!

The front door opens and she hears a quick rustle of coat and briefcase hit the sofa, then the bedroom door close. Not a Hello honey, I’m home. Never that. He seems to be so dissatisfied with everything about his life lately. Is he having second thoughts about this marriage? She hears him minutes later, heavy footed as he follows the well worn path into the kitchen.

Hey babe, how was your day? she calmly asks, noting the bright blue sports bag in his hand.

I’m going to the gym, he says, looking at the stove. Oh, finally decided to cook?

Well, thanks for letting me know you made other plans. Hurt and disappointed at his response, she quickly turns away to avoid is accusing eyes. Really, did she expect anything different? Deep down, she knows where this is all going. It would be so easy right now to just give up; throw in the towel. Marcus doesn’t want to be here in this relationship. That is becoming increasingly clear. But Anna has too much pride to give up so easily.

Placing the wooden spoon on a holder, she leans into him, playfully grabbing him around the waist. Come on honey, I came home early so we can spend some time together. How about making a little effort?

Standing stiffly, he looks anywhere but at her. He doesn’t want to be here.

I made your favorite. Can’t you take a night off from the gym and spend some time with me? I think we need it Marc.

I’m meeting the guys at the racquetball court at 6:30. I already said I would. He says as he pushes away from her. Sorry, I’ll eat when I get back.

Stepping back, she turns away from him, tears filling her eyes. That’s the last thing she wants him to see, the weakness and failure clear on her face. As she listens to his footsteps trudge through the house and out the front door, she resigns to the fact that it’s over. This is it! They’ve only been married a little over two years. It shouldn’t be this hard.

Slowly and with much regret, she walks into their bedroom; sees his suit thrown over a rack in the closet. She bought him this suit after her first big job was complete. He was so proud that all her hard work was finally beginning to pay off. He once wore this suit with pride. Now it isn’t even worthy of a hanger. She can smell his cologne, a thick scent that makes her nose itch. She knows something is going on, has been for some time now. She knows there’s some proof of it somewhere, she has just been too afraid to confront it. She’s no fool though. A woman’s intuition is a strong, mighty thing, and any woman would be a fool to ignore it.

Touching the edge of his coat, she feels the lining of the soft silk inside. She checks its pockets, looking for evidence of something her heart is afraid of, and it doesn’t disappoint. Snuggly wedged in the deep corner is a motel receipt, dated two weeks before. Her eyes fill with tears again. That bastard! Her friends had warned her, saying they saw him in the car with a blonde woman in the middle of the day, but when she asked him about it, he accused her of spying on him.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, receipt in hand, Anna cries. Cries for what a sham her marriage has become. Cries for her disappointments and all the dreams she once held so close to her heart. But there is also some relief too. She doesn’t want to live her life like this. She’s been feeling emotionally deserted for some time now, and there’s no way she is going to allow anyone to treat her this way.

Hours later, when Marcus finally comes home, Anna confronts him about the receipt. He’s angry, pushing her away when she gets in his face.

I don’t love you! I’m not sure I ever did, he yells, frustrated at his inability to come up with any other excuse. I need someone who puts me first. Not you and your stupid attempts at business success. That’s more important to you than I am!

How can you say that? You encouraged me to start my business! She cries, starting to shake uncontrollably. You know, I deserve more than this, more than you! You selfish, self-centered bastard! You’ve been emotionally unavailable for months, unable to even look me in the face. What a pathetic excuse for a man you are! You aren’t even man enough to be honest with me, sneaking around behind my back!

He stands there looking at her, unable to say anything in his defense. What can he say? She busted him and now there’s no going back. He knows her well enough to know that this kind of deception is unforgivable. If there was ever any clear rule Anna felt strongly about, it was fidelity. And she had said, more than once ‘You cheat, you’re outta here!’

He disgusts her. She looks at him now, his lean, trim body glistening with sweat. His thinning hairline, for sure his most discomforting asset, creeps further away from the dark brows that arch above his amber eyes. He was prime back in the day, when she was young and foolish, thinking her love for him could last a lifetime. And now, she wonders what in the hell did she ever see in him? He is nothing more than a pretty face. Nothing more. How could she be so stupid to put all the hopes for her future in the hands of this coward? This poor excuse for a husband? Oh, what an idiot she’s been! Going along with this sham of a marriage for this long! What a fool you’ve been Anna!

    I’m in love with Stephanie.

Your secretary? Caught off guard, Anna yells her response. How fucking original! God, he has got to be kidding! Of course she puts you first, you idiot! She sees your paycheck! She’s young, beautiful, and looking for a sugar daddy! What makes you think you can keep up with a woman like her? And those stupid ass hair plugs you think no one sees? She couldn’t believe what was happening. Damn it, this man is an idiot. You do know she’s fucking the FedEx guy, right? His look of surprise makes the sudden impact of pain bearable. Don’t you listen to the gossip in your own office?

That’s just a cover, he stammers, blindsided by the fact Anna knows about that.

A cover? She’s fucking him because he’s HOT! She’s fucking you because you have money, Marc, and you’re probably buying her shit no one else her age can afford! And what about me? Have you been using a condom? I better not have anything Marcus, so help me God! She shouts, scared now with that thought. You need to leave. You need to pack your shit, and get the hell out of here. You’re a disgrace Marc, and I hope you get what you deserve!

After he’s gone, Anna sits for a long time on the couch, thinking back to the days when they were newlyweds, when their love flowed freely. It wasn’t a chore, something to think about. It was pure and simple love. Their honeymoon in Mexico’s most beautiful resort was pure bliss and she didn’t think she could possibly be any happier. At the time she thought Marcus would give her a lifetime of love and fulfillment. And now after only two short years, it has come to be nothing but loneliness and regret…

Two weeks later, after seeing two doctors to confirm she had no unexpected venereal diseases, Anna had her soon to be ex-husband served with divorce papers. She had them presented to him in his office which happened to be during a very important stock holders meeting. She couldn’t have planned it better. She wished she could have seen the look on his face when the news broke in front of his very straight-laced boss and his righteous colleges. Once the news got around that he was doing the secretary, she was reassigned and he was publicly reprimanded.

They sold the house, split the profit, and moved on. It was so tidy it was like she had never been married. Like the last 5 years of relationship never existed. But it put Anna in a cloud of doubt, of men and of her own instincts. How could this have happened to her? How could a strong, independent woman have fallen for such a weak guy like Marcus Santos? She was humiliated, unable to see ahead to a time where this would be completely behind her. Then she would feel no more pain because of him, and the thought of him wouldn’t make her want to cry.

    Chapter 2

    Two Years Later

A night out with the girls is exactly what she needs. It’s been a long week, and one particular client has been very difficult about her dining room window treatments. Plain or patterned, light or dark? Oh, why doesn’t she just take my advice? Isn’t that what I’m being paid for? Well, the lady could contemplate all she liked. Anna was taking the weekend off!

As she gets ready for the evening, she again goes over the last 2 years in her clouded mind. Every time she thinks about it, the details change a little. Marcus was just an ass. Plain and simple. After 5 years together, 2 and a half of them married, you’d think you knew who you were sleeping next to every night. The little tramp he left her for would give Anna her ultimate revenge, she was sure of it. ‘What comes around goes around’. The moment some hotter, richer stud paid her any attention, she’d leave Marcus high and hard, all alone and less one ball! Revenge is sweeter when someone else unwittingly does it for you. And a lot less messy, too.

But the scars remain and Anna is wise enough to know she may never get over it. Too much was at stake when she got married. In life, there were some things you were expected to do, and getting married was one of them. Her parents expected it. His parents expected it. Her whole life had been mapped out in front of her. She thought she was independent enough, that Marcus was man enough, to let her fulfill her own dreams too, aside from being a wife and mother.

Her business fulfilled a lot of that dream. Being independent and self reliant was important to Anna. She didn’t want to ever have to depend on anyone else for financial survival. Too many of her friends had depended on men, and too many were sadly disappointed with their choices. She knew the time would come when she’d come to a crossroads; when the decision would need to be made regarding parenting and childrearing.

Marcus had always said she wouldn’t have to work when she got pregnant. ‘Oh, you’re so lucky’ her naïve friends would say, thinking she was the luckiest woman in the world if she could stay home to nurture her babies herself. Anna thought that too. But the babies never came, and the dream of that life died.

So now her work consumed her life, the one constant she had complete control over. All the decisions made were hers and hers alone. Any mistakes made were hers too. And that she could live
