    Introduction

Canine kidney disease takes many forms, including acute kidney failure, chronic kidney failure, congenital kidney disease, glomerulonephritis and kidney failure due to Lyme or other tick-borne diseases. While many pets will go on to recover from this devastating disease, for others the end result is euthanasia.

When the kidneys and their chic filtering system malfunction due to injury, illness or--as is usually the case--unknown causes, doubtless harmful waste begins to amass in the recirculating bloodstream. If the correct balances of fluid, minerals and electrolytes (like sodium and potassium ) aren't maintained, significant complications can develop in other organs.

The disease is aggressive and devastating. While the disease tends to affect older dogs, younger dogs are also at risk. Sadly, a dog’s kidneys are subject to a good range of life-endangering aberrations. Trauma, ingestion of antifreeze or poison, fungal infections and dehydration can all lead to kidney problems.
