Think tonight I’ll take a few bottles,
said Buck as I pushed him along. I guess I’m always pushing Buck around–down to Jack’s, or to the grocery store, or wherever—on account of him being in a wheelchair and all. I don’t much mind it.
Goddamned Fourth of July,
Buck said. I don’t wanna have to come back down here with all these amateurs...
Buck was always saying stuff. I hardly ever knew what he meant. I never say so because I like hearing the way he talks. He’d been in a chair ever since the accident–same accident as my Dad’s. My Dad and Buck were best friends and Buck’s always telling stories about them, and the Army, and everything. He’s real funny. I sure like those stories.
