    Chapter 1

    My Town

I live in a very small town called Acoomemeck ( A coo mick). It was originally settled by Native Americans and named by them. Most towns around here were originally settled by Native Americans and named by them. They all sound like beautiful songs. Like most small towns everyone knows everyone in town and most of their business. Nobody knows the actual meaning of Acoomemeck, and it doesn’t seem to bother anyone much that they don’t. Every now and then someone will come to town and try to research the true meaning of the name. They spend numerous hours in the town library and interview all the oldest people in town. They go to surrounding towns and try to get information from there. They spend many hours researching and reading. They put a lot of effort into their research, and I think each person truly feels they will discover the true meaning of the name of our town. In spite of all their efforts they always come up with the same thing - nothing. There is no meaning to be found for the name of my town anywhere.

I think it’s a cool name to have, so I’ve come up with a meaning for it. I thought about it for a long time, and I really considered the landscape here. I’d walk around my neighborhood and take notes about what I saw. I interviewed a few people like my mother and some neighbors. It took me a long time, but I finally came up with it, The Land of Beautiful Meadows, with a river running through it. I say it that way because that’s the way the Native Americans would have said it.

Furthermore it sounds better that way. The reason I named it that is because there used to be a great number of meadows in my town according to my mother. There are pictures of the meadows in the town library and in my school. They look like beautiful places with tall grass and button shaped flowers growing wild. It must have been a great place to lay back and watch the clouds roll by.

The meadows have been replaced by stores, houses, and businesses. More Native Americans lived here back then, than the number of people living here now. Many Native Americans lived all over this part of the country, and there were quite a few of them living right in my town.

I guess I know just about everyone in town, and they know me. There isn’t much excitement here, and sometimes it can get boring. My mother keeps saying that someday she’d like to move away, but we never do. I like my town even though it’s very small. We need all the stores and houses we have, but I wish we had some of those meadows back. They would be a great place to have ball games, picnics, and play hide and go seek in.

My parents grew up in this town with their parents, my grandparents. My family has lived here a long time. The town was settled in the seventeen hundreds, 1715 to be exact, and it hasn’t grown all that much over the years. I guess that’s what happens to some places they just get forgotten. They just stay small and never really grow.

    Chapter 2

    North Street Elementary School

My school was built in 1896. You might not think that was a long time ago, but Paul Revere’s great grand children could have come here. Well, they didn’t actually come here, but they could have?

The outside of my school is brick. Not the bright clean, red brick you see nowadays, but that old red
