    I met them at the swim-up bar. Wonderful things, swim-up bars. I’d been to this one each afternoon for the past three days. Now I was down to my last 24 hours on the island, but that was fine. I was ready to head back to the States. I’d been working odd jobs on the island for, well –

    Four months? the incredibly beautiful woman asked, a tropical drink in her hand. You’ve been here for four months?

    Four months, I said. And change.

    Dude, someday you’ll have to head back to the real world, said her companion, a big guy with close-cut hair and the thick chest and belly of an offensive lineman. I had just met the guy, but I knew the announcement would be coming very soon: I played football for X university. Guys who do that always mention it. The longer I walk the Earth, the easier people are to read.

    I’d been talking with them for a only few minutes, the friendly, usual alcoholic small talk you get meeting people at resorts like this one. All-inclusive, mostly couples, everyone in a good mood because they’re on vacation and can swim up to a bar.

    Her name was Cat, as in Catherine. His name was Eric, as in … Eric. In the few minutes we talked, I got that he was 27, she was 25 and they’d been together for two years. I saw no engagement or wedding rings, and they didn’t mention either occasion, so after two years it must have been a source of angst for at least one of them. I was sure I’d find out the situation if we kept talking. Because that’s what people do, tell you about their situations.
