Pat Beauchamp Washington
'Pat' Washington (née Waddell) was born in Cumberland, England in 1892, and joined the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) in 1912. As 'Pat' Waddell, she went to France in 1915 to serve as an ambulance driver, transporting the dead and wounded to hospitals or hospital ships, and lost a leg when her ambulance was hit by a train. After purchasing her own prosthetics, she returned to France in 1918. She published her memoirs of the First World War under the name Pat Beauchamp, and in the Second World War wrote of the Polish struggle in Eagles in Exile under the name Pat Washington. She was awarded the French Croix de Guerre, the Belgian Médaille de la reine Élisabeth, and the Polish Grand Cross of Merit (military class). (Wikipedia)
