Table For One - Irishea Hilliard

    PREFACE

The idea of sitting at a table for one can be unsettling. In reality, it takes great confidence and fortitude to have a meal in a public setting alone. Without a doubt some would never consider dining by themselves.Yet, there are times in life when being alone is necessary for the sake of wholeness within the spirit, soul and body.

Tο begin the journey through the Table for One, I introduce the fictitious story of a young lady with whom you may identify with literally, or conceptually. She personifies the inner conversation, the struggle and the temptation that singles and people in general face whether at a table, a social event, at church or in life itself. She has the voice of a mindset that may resemble yours, if not in totality maybe in some abstract manner. Though her story is distinct it offers you the same victory through the completed work of Christ in you.

I invite you to engage her story for the sake of your life.

    CHAPTER ONE

    Table for One Please

There it was, the restaurant that took a month to get reservations confirmed was finally in view. The courage to make the reservation was overcome, and now dressed in a bridesmaid dress, I was not just ready to enjoy the experience so many talked about, but I was filled with a girlish excitement. With the parking lot filled with exclusive makes and models of automobiles, it was as if everyone had a special occasion to celebrate over fine cuisine. I knew I was in for a treat. After all, Why not celebrate? I thought to myself, I deserve this! Oblivious to the side glances of others walking around me, I was immersed in my first impressions. From the quaint lobby with décor from the 19th century to the grand stateroom—the ambience immediately appealed to all five senses. It did seem to be everything my very affluent friend raved about. She went on and on with how her renowned husband brought her to this place in celebration of their 3rd anniversary. Everything was just as she described: the darkened room showcased a very formal setting filled with candlelit tabletops. On each table were beautifully, well-starched tablecloths with china and flatware seldom if ever seen at some of the cities better-known eateries. This was definitely fine dining at its best. The music filled the room with classical and light-hearted pop, while women adorned in precious gems and long length sequined but understated gowns danced unguarded ballroom style, while others sat enjoying public intimacy. Well-fitted tuxedos were on men scattered throughout the room—some as escorts others as staff working with poise and intention. Guests and restaurant hosts, alike, seemed to float as they walked towards tables passing those seated and those dancing. It was as if they knew something others only heard about, and I was stoked!

Then, the waft of a beautiful yet undetectable fragrance was snatched from my attention when the question was posed: Will you be waiting on your party, Ma‘dam? In the time span of a moment the excitement within me turned to complete anxiety as I suddenly second guessed my decision to come: Maybe I should cancel and return when there won't be so many people. I'll be the only one sitting at the table, ugh. Mmh, I should have called my ex, at least I wouldn't be by myself! As quickly as the thoughts of apprehension came, with surprising composure I said, "A table for one,
