The Femme Fatale Collection - The Cheat Mistress

    Bayonetta

    A note on Normal mode

This walkthrough was written with a play through on Normal mode. On the easier difficultiescrows carrying Umbran Tears Of Blood do not appear, combat is far easier, and completion of itwill not lead to harder difficulty modes being unlocked. On the harder difficulties, enemies are farmore dangerous with stronger attacks, different enemies appear in different places; the Alfheimportal challenges are significantly more difficult, and crows carrying Umbran Tears Of Bloodappear in different locations. While battle tactics in this guide may not be suitable for play throughson Hard or Non Stop Infinite Climax mode, the locations of all Alfheim portals, Gold LPs,Antonio’s notebooks, Broken Witch Heart fragments, Broken Moon Pearl pieces are relevant and care has been taken to list where the crows with Umbran Tears Of Blood appear in Normal, Hard and Climax modes.

Combat Tips   Bayonetta relies heavily on your ability to pull off combo commands in battles. Some combos just unleash a flurry attacks, and while nothing special do reasonable amounts of damage, other combos end in what are known as Wicked Weaves. Wicked Weaves are pretty powerful, and the longer the combo involved the more powerful the Wicked Weave.   Stringing together combos is important, but so is knowing when to dodge the attacks of your enemies. Pulling the RightT/R2 at the right time, normally, will not only mean that you dodge an enemy’s attack, but that you enter Witch Time. Time slows down and this is a great opportunity to unleash a flurry of combos on your enemies, reposition yourself or pick up a downed enemy’s weapon. You are able to dodge part way through a combo and continue that combo, but it involves holding down the button you have just pressed in the combo and pressing dodge then pressing the next button in the combo after letting go of the other two: this is known as Dodge Offset.   You may not know any combos now, but take the time to peruse the File (accessed via the BACK/SELECT button when in a chapter) named ‘Umbran Arts’ and read up on the various techniques and combos described there. Take the time to remember some of the combos and it will make progress through the game a lot easier on Normal and harder difficulties.

    Item Usage

Bayonetta can use healing and support items, and they can be hot keyed to the D-pad. However, using items during a chapter will result in your chapter rating going down to the worst levels possible, but there is no achievement or trophy for not using items, and several that revolve around gaining Platinum rankings can be done on any difficulty level. This walkthrough never tells you when to use items; it assumes that you are keeping an eye on Bayonetta’s health yourself. Accessories and Techniques

During Bayonetta, various accessories that help with combat, and various techniques that add new combo potentials and abilities will become available. Unless otherwise stated in the walkthrough, buy from these as you please, but there may be times when you need to repeat chapters in order to save up enough halos to purchase things that are needed or are useful for upcoming battles, challenges, and optional challenges.

Optional extras: Alfheim Portals and Crows

This guide lists where both Alfheim portals and crows carrying Umbran Tears Of Blood are. However many of the Alfheim challenges can be especially difficult without the right weapons, combos or accessories, which are often only available in later chapters or when you have enough halos to buy them. Crows are near impossible to catch until you have access to Beast Within techniques Panther and Crow. So in order to complete these you may need to replay a chapter when you have the right weapons, accessories or techniques. If you are playing on Hard or Climax modes, you probably have them already or enough halos to buy them.

    Walkthrough

Records of Time - Witch Hunts

Just before the Prologue really begins you are treated to a fight scene where you may begin to get to grips with Bayonetta’s moves as she falls through the sky, fighting on the backs of masonry. Use this opportunity, where you can receive no damage, to experiment with the game’s controls and begin to become accustomed to them. Once the Prologue start screen appears, take the opportunity to save your game, and then start the Prologue when ready.

    Prologue – The Vestibule

    Verse 1

After a lengthy cutscene you’re thrown into a battle tutorial, if an enemy hits you it will affect your battle rating for that fight, you can’t receive damage just now (if this is your first playthrough). Just follow the onscreen instructions and successfully complete these basic moves in order to progress the game. Enemies release Halos when defeated; collect these so that you’ll have currency to spend in Rodin’s store The Gates of Hell.

During this tutorial you will also be introduced to the wonders of Witch Time. In order to successfully go into Witch Time you need to use the Right Trigger to dodge an enemy’s attack just before it would hit you. You’ll know that you have engaged Witch Time correctly when the screen becomes purpled and your enemies’ actions seem slower than your own, but remember that Witch Time only lasts for a short period of time once engaged.

After this battle and every other battle you are rewarded a battle rating, it is judged from how long the battle took for you to complete, how many combos you completed and how much damage you received. Your battle rating will affect your overall scoring for the chapter you are playing through. While high scores are not entirely necessary to complete the game, the bonuses for getting high scores and not using any items during the course of a chapter, i.e. more Halos, means that it is worth aiming for the top. There is also the Platinum! Achievement/Bronze Trophy, which requires you to earn ten platinum medals in ten different battles.

    Verse 2

Watch or skip another cutscene (scenes may be skipped by pressing START and selecting to skip). After the scene ends a battle begins and you are no longer immune to damage; you will notice a time limit to completing three Torture Attacks. The option to complete Torture Attacks becomes available by building up your Magic Gauge (a series of pearl like shapes under your green Vitality Gauge), to do this attack enemies and pull off combos to build up your gauge levels and once they are significant enough you will be told to press Y + B/Triangle + Circle to perform a Torture Attack. Carrying out a Torture Attack will deplete your Magic Gauge by one full bar (series of pearls). If you are hit by an enemy attack your Magic Gauge will be depleted so sometimes it is better to dodge than to continue with the combo you are carrying out. Carrying out one successful Torture Attack will give you the Achievement/Bronze Trophy I’m A Bit… I Mean Witch.

With another cutscene out of the way, and your first chapter summary delivered, you gain the Achievement/Bronze Trophy A Primer In The Magical Arts for completing the Prologue. Then you are introduced to Angel Attack, a mini game that is available to be played at the end of each chapter when you have collected Arcade Bullets during the course of a chapter. Follow the onscreen instructions.

    Chapter I – The Angel’s Metropolis

Take the opportunity to save your game before beginning the next chapter. If you want to go replay the Prologue, or any other chapter once you have played through it once, open up the Submenu on the Chapter screen, go to Chapter Select and choose the chapter you want to play again.

Another cutscene and then you’re in charge after arriving in the city of Vigrid. Even though you can progress straight onto the next area through the security gates on the opposing platform you start on, take the time to investigate the train area (lower and upper level, which is reached through double jumping from either the train or the stairs) and destroy furniture to reveal Halos and other useful items, such as Purple Butterflies that fill up your Magic Gauge; Unicorn Horn, Baked Gecko and Mandragora Root that you will eventually be able to use for item Concoction, which makes support items to heal health and restore magic. As a general rule you should always check an area for destructible parts of its environment, as they will often reveal these useful items.

In fact destroying all of the benches in the upper area will cause the train to leave, revealing a Broken Moon Pearl on the train tracks. When you have collected two of these it will increase the size of your Magic Gauge. In Non Stop Infinite Climax difficulty there is a crow with an Umbran Tears Of Blood just forward of the platform you started the chapter on.

Once you’re done exploring the initial area, go through the security gates and follow the corridor until you have reached a strange wall with a small orb near its bottom. Attack the wall repeatedly until it shifts out of the way and you are given a brief moment in which to pass by it. On the side of the chasm you begin on, drop down to a ledge with a Concoction item floating on it.

In this area there is an ornate doorway on the opposite side of the chasm. Drop down to the foot of the chasm and find a chest. There are many of these throughout the game and in order to gain the Achievement/Bronze Trophy Treasure Collector and Achievement/Silver Trophy Treasure Fanatic you need to persist in finding these chests. Attack this particular strange chest and a key for the doorway will be released.

    Verse 1

Grab the key and make your way back up to the side you started on. Here Angels will attack you. Dispatch them, with the guns, and the slowly attacking key if you wish. With the Angels defeated, jump across the chasm and use the key to open the doorway.

Inside the following area there is a copy of ‘A Voyage Towards The Truth’ to be collected, this forms the first part of Antonio’s notes on the mysterious worlds of Vigrid’s more magical denizens. In order to gain the Achievement/Silver Trophy Truth In Its Purest Form you will need to collect all of Antonio’s notes.

    Verse 2

You will notice a statue in part of this area, with a broken counterpart next to it. Approach and check the statues and a battle will ensue. Defeat the Angels, and the broken statue will be reconstructed.

You will now be instructed on how to dodge a lightning attack that will enable you to enter Witch Time and run across the water to the next section you need to move on to. Choose to Lift one of the statues then activate the task. You need to press the Right Trigger at just the right moment before the lightning bolt strikes you. Once in Witch Time run across the water. At the other end of the area, attack the mysterious wall so that it becomes a lift, but don’t stand on it yet.

    Alfheim Portal 1/Verse 3

The challenges found in Alfheim portals can be extremely difficult. Even though they are mentioned in this walkthrough as you first encounter each one, in some instances it may be better to go in after the challenges once you’ve played the game all the way through. This is so that you may use different equipment and accessories that may further aid you in completing the challenges. One Achievement/Bronze Trophy comes from discovering all Alfheim portals, The Path To The Heavens, one Achievement/Silver Trophy from completing half of the portals, Angel May Cry, the final related Achievement/Gold Trophy, Angel Slayer, is gained by completing all of the portal challenges.

Back to Alfheim 1. Return to the place where you found the key. There is now a glowing orange portal there. Step on the portal and allow yourself to be transported. Run over to an open area. Here you are instructed on how to complete the challenge. Defeat all of the enemies before time expires, but they may only be harmed during Witch Time. So get dodging. If you find that the Angels are not attacking you enough to execute Witch Time hold the LB/L1 button to taunt your enemies this will incense a nearby Angel that is targeted, but beware that a taunted Angel will attack you far more ruthlessly and quickly.

It’s a good idea to move around your enemies so that they end up being grouped together when you enter Witch Time, that way any attacks you do in Witch Time will hit multiple enemies. Also keep in mind that though it may be tempting to use Torture Attacks on the small Angels when it becomes available, save it for the big Angels as they have far larger amounts of health and an instant kill on one of those will save you a lot of time. You may only be hit five times in Normal mode before you fail the task. Successful completion of the challenge rewards you with another Broken Moon Pearl piece.

Once you’ve completed Alfheim 1, return to the portal. Once back in the area the portal is based go back to the statues and then activate Witch Time via them, make your way across the water and then take the lift to the next area.

A crow with an Umbran Tears Of Blood (Hard) can be found in the grassy area to the left of where the lift emerges.

Search for items and then go down the corridor that accompanies the lift. Rodin introduces you to his store in the following area. It is entirely up to you whether you buy anything, but the only things you will be able to afford at the moment are some Items and Techniques. The decision of whether to buy anything now is up to you, though it is probably worth buying at least one new technique. Air Dodge is recommend. Note that in order to eventually gain full Magic Gauge and Vitality Gauge you will need to purchase all of the available Moon Pearls and Witch Hearts that are for sale in The Gates of Hell, as well as collecting their pieces.

After shopping, double jump up to the balcony above the exit that leads outside. There are some breakable jars on the balcony as well as the first Broken Witch Heart fragment, which if you collect four of them will form into a whole Witch Heart and increase your Vitality Gauge.

When you enter the courtyard area, at the bottom of the first set of steps there is another Antonio notebook to collect, ‘The Crystal Witch & Sage’, so be sure to pick this up. On the right hand side of the courtyard, over the other side of the wall, halfway down it when approaching from the inside area with The Gate To Hell, before a stone carved gazebo, is another chest. Destroy it to reveal a Broken Witch Heart. In the nearby gazebo is an Arcade Bullet concealed in a pot, which is used to play Angel Attack. There is another stone gazebo on the left side, which sometimes contains Halos or Concoction items. In the centre of the area, before the lower fountain, is a crow with an Umbran Tears Of Blood, (Normal).

    Verse 4

Approaching the last part of the courtyard triggers a battle with a new Angel type: Applaud, and Decorations. This battle is also the first time that you have a real chance to gain downed enemies’ weapons, which replace punches and kicks when you equip them. However, enemy weapons have a short life span.

A mini-boss, Beloved, that appears once you’ve defeated all of the more regular enemies is best attacked from behind, with attacks targeting the red spot on his back, but don’t hang around there too long or else Beloved will grab after you, dodge if this happens and dodge is axe sweeps as well. After you have significantly depleted Beloved’s health you will be asked to perform a Climax Attack, so just press the buttons asked for and watch. Pick up the Gold LP that Beloved leaves after his demise.

If you are playing on Non Stop Infinite Climax difficulty there is a crow with an Umbran Tears Of Blood atop one of the streetlights.

    Verse 5

Once this battle is over, return to the area where you arrived on the lift. Here you will be sent several waves of rather difficult Angels to defeat. You will need to start dodging almost the instant you go near them. Despite you not needing to complete this battle in order to progress through the chapter, you do need to complete this fight if you want to have defeated all battles available in the chapter.

Back in the courtyard go past the fountain near the end of the area. To the left of the structure at the end is a crow with an Umbran Tears Of Blood (Hard); it is up on the stone overhang just after the left piece of fencing. When you are ready enter the doorway at the end.

    Verse 6

Here dispatch the Angels that appear, and then search around the room for items. Jump up to the upper level to collect another Broken Witch Heart segment. When you have everything from this room, attack the strange wall and proceed to the next outside area.

    Verse 7

A brief cutscene occurs once you’ve have walked a short distance into the new area. Progress along the path and shoot at the double-headed dragon enemy and dodge its attacks. You will not be able to kill it, however you are still awarded a battle medal.

Progress further down the path and collect Antonio’s note ‘A Witch’s Brew’, this new note will enable you to see what ingredients are needed when Concocting. The Achievement/Bronze Trophy Double, Double, Toil And Trouble is gained by Concocting twenty items, so if you have a large stash of ingredients already, get Concocting. Behind the note is another Gates of Hell. If you feel the need to shop, then pay a visit to Rodin. The Golden LP from Beloved becomes the Onyx Roses (a pair of shotguns) after handing the LP over to Rodin.

Back out of Rodin’s store, press BACK/SELECT on your controller to access your menu. Here you can navigate to areas such as equipment settings, items and files. If you want to equip the Onyx Roses, the Equip section is the place to do it. You have the opportunity to set up two sets of weapon combinations that can be switched between in game with the LT/L2 button. If you’re wondering which side of the
