    He didn't skip exactly when he walked, anymore than he was actually able to laugh or smile when he was happy, which was most of the time. But there was something about his eyes and in his body movements that told what a happy little dog he was.. Not looking much like a Schnauzer wasn't exactly a draw back. Having kept his floppy ears and not being so closely trimmed gave him a friendlier look.

    This was a lazy day for Scruffy. The kind of day that could be spent burying and reburying bones or simply napping in the shade on the ever so comfortable lawn furniture. He was always careful though to shake off vigorously the dust that would be in his fluffy salt and pepper fur before boarding the furniture.

    Next door was his best friend and sort of uncle, Kydd. Scruffy didn't understand how they were related, but just having the companionship of the large graywhite Malamute was enough for him. The times they had and the meals they shared were a source of great pleasure to the little dog, and the nightly walks were the highlight of his day.

    Kydd, having a few years on Scruffy, was in a position to be the more dominant, but owing to a great kindness that lay beneath the large blue eyes this wasn't very often possible. What his life would be like without Kydd he had no way of knowing. The other dog had always been there and Scruffy hoped always would be.
