About this ebook

In his sequel to Alexandria of Africa, Eric Walters brings exciting new characters to life, with the urban jungle of Los Angeles as their backdrop.

It's the ultimate clash of cultures when Nebala, a Maasai warrior, leaves behind Kenya and, with two fellow Maasai, and crosses the world to compete in a marathon in the most famous zip code in the world: Beverly Hills, California. Reunited with their friend Alexandria, now their guide to strange, new surroundings, the trio are confronted with life in fast-paced, extravagant Beverly Hills, and customs and attitudes the Maasai find by turns baffling and amusing. Beverly Hill Maasai is another heartwarming, fast-paced, and thought-provoking novel from one of Canada's most popular young adult writers.

I really enjoyed Alexandria of Africa, and it was a clever move on the part of the publisher to make the cover of Beverly Hills Maasai look so similar, because that was what drew me to the book; I initially thought it was a copy of book one, and then realized that I was looking at the sequel. Interestingly, a reader does NOT have to have read book one in order to appreciate book two, since Walters provides enough background to the second story to make book two make sense. Maasai boys, from the area that Alexandria visited, have made the trip to Beverly Hills in order to win the $250 000 prize awarded to the first place finisher of the marathon. They arrive quite unexpectedly, and end up staying with Alexandria. The story moves quickly and believably to a surprising conclusion. If you enjoyed Alexandria of Africa, you don't want to miss this one.
