    Memories from the Attic

We had to sell the old family home not so long ago. After my Great Grandma Addie passed away there was no one left in Swainsboro to live in the house or keep it up. No one in our family. We were scattered all over. Still are. So what else could we do? The first step was to travel to the old homestead and sort through all the stuff that remained. And believe you me, there was a lot of stuff. But one particular box in the attic captured my interest, and I believe it will yours as well.

Dusting it off and opening it up, I found an old violin in need of repair, some articles of clothing that clearly belonged to a different age, and two old books. It turned out the books were diaries kept by my great grandparents in their younger days. I found them in the late afternoon when a few streaks of sunlight still found their way through cracks in the roof and walls of the old house. I stayed up late that night reading.

I used to hear stories about my great grandparents and how they lived through the Civil War. I knew that my Great Grandpa William had fought for the Union and that my Great Grandma Adeline lived in Georgia. But that was about all I knew ... until I found that dusty old box in the attic.

I have never taken life seriously nor spent much time contemplating
