    INVISIBLE JUSTICE

It was December 10th, 2008, David Holbrook and his two best friends stood in the mess tent in a very dangerous part of Afghanistan. Tristan was yelling Oh my God, Oh my God! Grady was running around like a rabbit while David stared at the monitor. What was the big deal? David’s wife Sara was in labor. Nine months earlier, David was home on leave for the second time in eight years. Apparently he used his time well. David and Sara were married ten years ago. David went into the Special Forces at the age of nineteen, they had almost two years to get pregnant, but it just didn’t happen. Prior to David entering the military he was already a brown belt in Tae kwon do, a state wrestler and a kick boxer. He was simply born a bad dude, but would give you the shirt off his back.

The military soon became aware of David’s talents and he was put into a select group amongst the Special Forces. David and his best friends, Tristan and Grady were the only three that would survive the intense training. No one ever doubted that David was the best, yet now he was standing there in front of the monitor ready to faint. There’s the head, there’s the ------- Oh my God, it’s a boy! gasped David. He was the happiest man alive. Sara was in seventh heaven. Only one thing could make it all complete, and that was for her husband to come home to his family. Covy’s cord was cut, cleaned up and was given a once over by the doctor before being placed in Sara’s arms. Tristan and Grady congratulated them both then stepped away from the monitor and outside of the tent to give them some privacy.

David looked at Sara, four more year’s sweetheart, four more years. This was a promise that David was going to keep. Sara yelled for Tristan and Grady to come back into the tent. They both hurried back to the screen. I need you two to promise me something pleaded Sara.

Anything Sara, name it said Grady.

I need you both to look after my husband and please make sure he returns to his family; all three of you stay safe. Both of you know as well as I, that David can be a little crazy". They both laughed,

Don’t worry Sara, he will be fine, that’s a promise.

David chuckled, like I’m the crazy one. It was now time for David to say good bye to his wife and his new son. Sara put on a fake smile as the screen went black.

Tomorrow’s mission was about as bad as it can get. All three are going to follow an Afghan guide into the mountains where Al Qaeda was supposed to be having a meeting. They also had two Afghan trained soldiers that were assigned to go with them for backup. Early the next morning all six men were packed up and started out on their mission. By noon they were deep into the mountains. Their guide, who David and his friends were having a hard time trusting (and for good reason it turns out), stayed about twenty feet ahead with the two soldiers about twenty feet behind him; Tristan and Grady stayed directly behind the two Afghan soldiers. Each of them was keeping alert to their surroundings. These three best friends had many signals including- beware. While David was watching the high rocks, he was also was keeping an eye on his guide. Within the blink of an eye he noticed the guide ever so slightly side step an area in the trail. David instantly sent the signal to his friends. He called the guide back to him as if he wanted to discuss something with him. The guide slowly started walking back towards David. In doing so he sidestepped the same area again. David was now sure that the guide was the enemy. He wasn’t sure about the other two but they seemed to be ok. David was also sure Al Qaeda was in the upper rocks. The guide could see it in David’s eyes that he had been found out and began to make his move. They were about ten feet away from where David knew the bomb was located. Within an instant, David’s boot was in the guide’s chest and he was uncontrollably falling backward to his death. As the guide was falling back towards a for sure explosion, David hustled for the rocks. Tristan and Grady grabbed the two Afghans and followed closely behind. It was a suicide mission for the guide; even if everything would have worked out as planned, anyone within 50 feet would’ve been dead. Al Qaeda, seeing what had just happened immediately started firing their weapons at where they were sure their enemy were. The only problem with that theory is that David, Tristan, Grady, and the two Afghan’s weren’t anywhere close. The enemy was firing America’s finest. The fire power was intense to say the least. David, not knowing how many Al Qaeda were there, called for backup. After a good five minutes, Al Qaeda started down the mountain to see what was left of their enemy. Now the forty or so Al Qaeda were standing in their own grave. White sheets were falling like snowflakes in the Rockies. You would have sworn there were forty or so men doing the firing. Even the two Afghans were hitting their targets. When it was over, the three American’s walked through the dead. All were dead except one. He slowly stood up. David took one step and was looking this terrorist in the eye. The dying man smiled at David and began to raise his weapon. David’s left hand was at his throat. A gurgle was all you heard. The last man standing dropped dead. David, Tristan, Grady, and the two Afghans headed back to the base. Soon, two choppers were flying overhead and the guys waved as they flew over. In about one minute the chopper was over the Al-Qaeda graveyard.

Holy shit can you believe that? There must be thirty dead Al Qaeda down there!

Oh yea I believe it, as soon as I heard it was Holbrook and his buds I knew this was a wasted trip.

David’s time was just about up, it was so close he could smell it. In one month he would be going home to his wife and son. What could possibly go wrong? Orders came in for all three of them first thing in the morning. David’s orders were voluntary only. He did not have to go. Tristan and Grady on the other hand had to. Don’t be an idiot David. Go home, don’t take the chance.

Your wife will take the first flight out here and kick your ass!

I can’t turn this down, she will understand, said David. Grady and Tristin could hear the phone conversation from 10 feet away.

Bullshit David! You promised! You promised!

Please Sara; don’t make this any harder on me. You know I wouldn’t do this if it wasn’t extremely important

More important than seeing your family?

    No, but close.

Oh forget it, there’s no sense in arguing, I know you’re going and that’s that. You don’t even have to go and you’re going, what a jerk. How long?

Four months and not a day longer.

Ok, please be careful, I love you so much.

    Back at ya.

Here’s your son; explain to him why you’re not coming home! David talked to his son for about ten minutes. It was amazing, like they had been together for his whole life. Ok buddy, put your mom back on for me.

    Ok dad, love you.

Back at you son. Sara got back on the phone. David could tell she had been crying. Don’t worry Sara, I’ll be careful.

I know David, but I’ll still be afraid till your home.

I’ll be there before you know it. Remember, I won’t be able to make any contact till the mission is over. Oh yea, I know the drill. Bye-bye, baby. David and his two best friends grabbed their gear and headed for the Blackhawk. It’s training time, said David.

On the evening of May 2, 2011, Sara was doing the last bit of dinner dishes when the phone rang. Sara, are you watching the news? asked her mom. Sara became instantly worried, she knew it had to involve David. Her mom was well aware of that and let her know that everything was alright. Hearing her mother’s assurances, Sara rushed to the TV and turned it on. President Obama was walking up to the podium. Sara was shaking, and then the President said the word’s number one terrorist, Bin Laden, is dead.

    Sara, are you there?

Yes mom I’m here, I think my husband will be coming home soon. Bye, mom. Sara hung up the phone with a big smile on her face. Hoo-rah baby, Hoo-rah.

David arrived at the airport where Sara, her parents, and his four year old son was waiting. The emotions were uncontrollable. For the next month the three were inseparable, but now it was time for David to start his new job at the mill. Life for David and his family had become so perfect. Covy was now four years old. It was a beautiful Sunday morning, and the three of them were getting ready for church. Covy couldn’t wait for service to be over. It was a Holbrook tradition to head for the ice cream parlor after church. Little did anyone know that today would be the end of this tradition?

The shouting started at the parlor. Covy was skipping about twenty feet ahead of his parents. The shouting was now much louder and closer. It was plain to see what was happening, it was a robbery. David saw the gun in the robbers hand and screamed for Covy to stop. The robber looked in their direction and fired a couple of quick shots while running away. David and Sara couldn’t do anything but run to their son. But before they could reach him Covy fell from a bullet. Sara’s heart stopped, this couldn’t
