- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved reading this book. I enjoy first hand accounts, especially ones this honest. Offers a very seldom seen point of perspective.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Interesting reading, and although it’s an autobiography, there’s plenty of fiction strewn about the story. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Cole’s story is one of alibis and being driven to violence by the actions of carpetbaggers, freebooters, and Kansans. While there’s certainly some truth in the violence along the Missouri/Kansas border in that era with bad actors on both sides, he never really expressed personal responsibility or regret.
The only acknowledgement of any bank robbery was the Northfield job where he was caught in the aftermath. Even then, he doesn’t acknowledge the James brothers being in the group despite historians having gobs of proof otherwise. It’s kind of bizarre to go through a story with parts you know to be untrue, yet the author offers contrition at the end. Overall, most of the story is as self serving as you might expect from an autobiography, but I definitely put it in the category of “interesting.”
