About this audiobook
Now 19-years old, skinny, and suffering from diabetes, Ralph Moody is ordered by his Boston doctor to seek a more healthful climate out West. Remembering his childhood ranching adventures, Ralph is delighted to strike out for new territory and prospects. Hustling jobs, and trying to find the means to follow the doctors orders, he becomes a Hollywood stunt rider. With Lonnie, a rascal and friend, he camps out in the Arizona desert and “shakes the nickel bush” as a cowboy artist-sculptor. Lawyers and bankers are eager to buy his work as the two move from town to town in an old Ford aptly named “Shiftless.” But will Ralph ever reach Littleton in time for the 4th of July roundup?....

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great story. Lovely reader. My only complaint is there are several dead spots in the recording. Missed some of the story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A delightful story. Lovely escape. I knew how it would end before I got there and didn’t mind.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I didn't much like this chapter of Moody's story. He's simultaneously perfect and hornswoggled, if one can imagine. His endless cataloguing of each and every breakdown of his piece-of-junk car grew wearying after the first breakdown. His patience with his wastrel companion was annoying, and the lack of resolution at the end was the last straw. I had a hard time reconciling the morally upright youth of the earlier books with this young man who is falsifying doctor's reports and lying to his mother at every turn. At this point, I'm glad there's only one more.
