About this audiobook

Lady Selene is the heir to the Great House of Ravenwood and the secret family gift of dreamwalking. As a dreamwalker, she can enter a person's dreams and manipulate their greatest fears or desires. For the last hundred years, the Ravenwood women have used their gift of dreaming for hire to gather information or to assassinate.

As she discovers her family's dark secret, Selene is torn between upholding her family's legacy — a legacy that supports her people — or seeking the true reason behind her family's gift.

Her dilemma comes to a head when she is tasked with assassinating the one man who can bring peace to the nations, but who will also bring about the downfall of her own house.

One path holds glory and power and will solidify her position as Lady of Ravenwood. The other path holds shame and execution. Which will she choose? And is she willing to pay the price for the path chosen?

I struggled with what rating to give this, and settled on 4 stars. The concept of the story is wonderful, but I removed one star because of the excessive and repetitive internal monologue of the two leading characters. I enjoy an angsty story with difficult dilemmas, but the main characters ran through an unvaried thought cycle that quickly became tedious. The same points were made over and over... and over.

This might have been improved if each of them had a confidant rather than this repeated back and forth in their own heads, but I understand that the story required them to be secretive and unable to share their struggles with anyone.

Despite the wordiness, the world didn't feel as fully fleshed out as the highest standard of speculative fiction. Perhaps this improves in the next books.
I give full credit to the author, though, for coming up with a very interesting premise and for being a breath of fresh air for fantasy readers who don't enjoy grimdark stories. The story does have darkness, danger, and sadness, but there is hope and nobility in the lead characters. And I did like that the chapters were short. I'm glad the author has more several more books, and I'll be checking them out, too.

Wow this story is brilliant. I loved the world the author built and how each kingdom held a special power or ability. I loved the light vs dark aspect and our main girl oh I just adore her how she wants to please her mother but starts questioning things that don't feel right in her heart. I don't want to give anything away so I'm trying to be very careful in my review but this series I have a feeling is going to blow mind. Everything feels so well thought out the characters have depth the world has depth the plot thickens with each chapter I am excited to continue this series and highly recommend especially if you love a good medieval fantasy swords and cloaks and gifting.
