About this audiobook

A washed-up captain. A worn-out ship. A crew of green cadets. And they're Earth's only hope.

The Alexander is the last true warship, a relic from the days of interstellar war. She's destined for the scrapyard, and her captain, Richard Hammett, is about to retire. Their last mission is a training run with a ship full of cadets.

It's supposed to be a routine hop through a wormhole Gate. But Gates have been going offline, one after another, and Hammett knows in his bones it means trouble. The kind of trouble only a real warship can handle.

Defying orders, he takes the Alexander through another Gate, and puts the ship smack dab in the path of an alien invasion. Now a captain at the end of his career will have to take dozens of terrified cadets and forge them into a crew of warriors, because the Alexander is all that stands between the Earth and the swarming ships of the Hive.

Lots of action, interesting take on an alien invasion and how it might have to be fought.

Waaaarrrrr! Every character is painted in a negative light except the warriors, even threw in a famous blues singer that used his talents to win skirmish. Apologies to the author, for I can sense talent and drive but a woeful lack of life experience and knowledge of other cultures, which take a long time to cultivate.

I was actually really enjoying this until the shuttle pilot didn't have any idea how to calculate an orbit. Not that he was rusty because he'd been relying on autopilot, or just didn't have time, but that he was never trained on it to begin with. That broke my willing suspension of disbelief.

Don't like the juvenile voice the narrator uses. Story was also rather juvenile.

A pretty good modern syfy novel but like most syfy today there's a lot of conflict what ever happened to just plain adventure

The audiobook narration forced me to stop listening about halfway through. Overly affected and poorly read. It’s a shame because the story was pretty good, not great but interesting.

The story is ok, for those who've seen Battlestar Galactica quite a bit feels very similar. The writing is quite plain and simple.
The narrator is good and clear and has a nice versatile voice.

Good shoot 'em up adventure in space. Believable structuring and character development. A few plot holes but all in all an enjoyable read and a pleasant distraction.

A great read from a gifted writer - a master of military histlry and psychology. The pace of the action is exhilarating and the heroes are inspirational models of courage, dignity and humanity.
