In this canine romp, fun-loving red dog Buster is sent away to Cowboy Camp for the weekend. But Buster doesn't want to go because he's afraid of sleeping away from home. If he can just start to have a little fun, he'll be sleeping and drooling in the bunkhouse in no time.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is a fantasy book. Buster is a dog who was left at "Cowboy Camp" by his owner, Brown Shoes. Buster starts out very homesick; like a lot of us are in new places. Eventually, Buster adjusts to this place. This book reminds me of anyone who is in a new place, scared and alone. Eventually, we all find our niches though.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Kids will easily relate to Buster's fears as his beloved owner, Brown Shoes, leaves the dog at "Cowboy Camp" - a cross between a kennel and a day camp. While Buster is homesick at first, he slowly adjusts to the new place and people. Fleming illustrated the book herself by pouring colored cotton fibers through hand-cut stencils. Her color choices evoke the desert feeling of the West.
Used for July 2009 Western themed Tons of Fun program for 2nd and 3rd graders. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Buster the dog has to go away to Cowboy Camp while Brown Shoes, his owner, goes away for a couple of days. Missing Brown Shoes and Betty, Bustr is very homesick; however, this does not last long as Buster realizes how much fun he is having catching balls, painting, and collecting sticks for a camp fire. Buster goes to sleep looking forward to the next day at camp.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Love this book. Great storyline and illustrations from a dog's perspective regarding his other dog friends at camp and the adults in his life.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I love the illustrations in this book because they represent colors of the desert. The pictures are very warming and inviting so I do not see any weaknesses with the illustrations. The story has what is called “cowpoke words”, which I think might be confusing for a child. There is a glossary of what the words mean in the back, which does teach kids to look up words they do not know and to expand their vocabulary.Because of these cowpoke words you could use this book as a great vocabulary lesson and see if the students can use these words in other sentences.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The story of a dog, Buster, and what happens when he has to go to a kennel, or cowboy camp. Buster is lonely and convinced that he is not going to enjoy his stay there. He ends up having a lot of fun and learning things about himself.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Buster goes to Cowboy Camp is a cute book written by Denise Fleming. This is a story about a dog who goes to camp. He does not want to go at first but after a while he starts having fun. I thought this book was really cute. It had great pictures. I love the story about Buster going to Sagebrush Kennels and how he called people by their shoes and not their name. I think this story would be good for students for the first day of school or maybe they are going to camp. It would also be good for them if they were going on vacation and had to leave there pet in a kennel.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great story about homesickness--even if the main character is a dog!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A cute picture book for anyone who has ever had to leave a pet at the kennel or go away to camp. Buster, a pointy-nosed red dog (craftily illustrated in "pulp painting"), must go away to Sagebrush Kennels because "Brown Shoes was going away for a weekend of rest and relation." Betty, the cat, "was staying with Mrs. Pink Slippers next door. Mrs. Pink Slippers loved cats. Mrs. Pink Slippers did not feel the same way about dogs."The story is cleverly told from sad-eyed Buster's view - humans are nothing but shoes and pants, Red Boots runs the Cowboy Camp. Other dogs are bigger, faster, or more skilled. Buster is homesick; but of course, not for long!A very cute and uniquely written and illustrated story - full of "cowpoke" words.
