Haven’t cringed like I did during select scenes in this novel in quite some time. Nick Cutter’s signature grotesque prose against a modern house haunting hits (forgive the pun) too close to home.

Feels like a modern stab at The Shining, brillant page-turner!

A family moves into a house and things go wrong from the beginning, but we really don’t know why they are going wrong. It seems that dad, a former lawyer, just has a tear of bad luck and fully invests himself into the house- repairing it etc. The young son goes off exploring and begins to see things that may or may not be there. And lastly, the wife seems like the glue of the family and the only one not losing her mind. Midway through, all is not what it seems.

The novel was frustrating because didn’t really get they why or the crazy. It just seemed like they moved in and things happen. Not enough time really devoted to the wife. She seemed more of a supporting character than a main character-especially when they try to cram as much info about her as they can in the end of the book. Things take a huge turn and plot twists start happening but they didn’t feel fulfilling. By the time I got to the end, I was glad it was over but didn’t really get all the answers that I felt were needed.

Loved this premis and the brilliant writing by cutter. Brills narration was excellent and breathing life into each character, enhancing the whole experience. Cutters elaborate visual depictions are incredible, giving the reader a movie like experience. It was suspenseful, teeth grinding, and made you cringe in all the right spots. Eek...I loved it. More Nick...more.

I can just picture how the idea of this book came to life:
AS-“boy, some people really get carried away with their home improvement projects.”
NC- “ I know, right? Once they start fixing things up, they just feel compelled to keep going.”
AS- “it’s like they are possessed.”
NC and AS- “or they are driven by some evil force.”
AS and NC- “that idea has legs, do you wanna write it with me?”
