About this audiobook

A “gripping and terrifying story…and one not to be missed” (Robert McCammon) from the acclaimed author of The Troop and The Deep!

A trio of mismatched mercenaries—Micah Shughrue, Minerva Atwater, and Ebenzer Elkins, colloquially known as “the Englishman”—is hired by young Ellen Bellhaven for a deceptively simple task: check in on her nephew, who may have been taken against his will to a remote New Mexico backwoods settlement called Little Heaven, where a clandestine religious cult holds sway. But shortly after they arrive, things begin to turn ominous. There are stirrings in the woods and over the treetops—and above all else, the brooding shape of a monolith known as the Black Rock casts its terrible pall. Paranoia and distrust soon grip the settlement. Escape routes are gradually cut off as events spiral toward madness. Hell—or the closest thing to it—invades Little Heaven. All present here are now forced to take a stand and fight back, but whatever has cast its dark eye on Little Heaven is marshaling its power—and it wants them all…

“A slow boil of unrelenting terror and inescapable consequences. Nick Cutter ups his game every time. Beautifully written—menace drips from every page.” —Seanan McGuire, New York Times bestselling author

“A sprawling epic that can stand alongside the best of ‘80s King, Barker, and McCammon. Fun, nasty, smart, and scary, and in all the right places.” —Paul Tremblay, acclaimed author of A Head Full of Ghosts and Disappearance at Devil’s Rock

I had no idea what the book was about as I went in on a suggestion from a friend. I don't know what I was expecting, but it was definitely a wild ride. I wish it had ended just a tad bit differently, but it stands as a reminder on how far and deep people will go for the ones they love. This is my first Nick Cutter book and his eye for detail really stuck out to me. I was hesitant about the book at first, but I'm glad I listened to it and looking forward to reading and listening to more.

Audiobook recorded on a potato. Lack of a pop filter makes the reader sound like they have a lisp. A disservice to the listener and author.

A masterpiece. Imagine The Thing meets IT. The way the author describes the scenes makes me doubt that watching them on the screen will have the same impact.

Another fun read from Nick Cutter. I personally really enjoyed this one. I thought the trio of mercenaries were a fun group to follow and root for, and their banter made for some solid humor. I also really liked the grotesque descriptions of the monsters. I would 100% watch an animated adaptation of this book, as I think a lot of the horror depicted would translate wonderfully to a visual media. For those who are wary of animal cruelty, this book has very little (save for an unfortunate shrew). I’ll also warn that there is a good amount of time-jumping and flashbacks in this book. The story is about a revivalist compound in the middle of the woods, but there is a bit of set-up before diving into that. I definitely had a few points where I questioned if I was reading the right book lol. I honestly would have rated this book a 4.5/5, but Everand doesn’t allow for halfsies.

Such a great read, I like the construction of the time line. Bouncing between the present, past, and future helps to break up the long and intense story. The book was chilling and the McCarthy like writing really drives the cold and somber tone. My only real issues with the book are the over the top characters and their dialogue with people they encounter at stores and gas stations etc. It hurts the realism some.

“Reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian” has got to be one of the funniest descriptions imaginable of this here novel, given the impressive volume of story and dialog cribbed almost directly from McCarthy’s work. An eclectic combination of Tombstone, the Shootist, the Dark Tower, an episode or two of the Oates short horror films, and numerous McCarthy works, this reads more like a museum curation of western fantasy horror for an audience unaccustomed to the genre’s well-mined conventions.

The dialog is memorably bad, it would pass as an inexpert translation of a dead language. Never in my life have I craved contractions more!

The poor narrator does their best with this one, god help them, it wasn’t enough.

Do yourself a favor and give the original Blood Meridian a listen! It’s a good way to study up for the vocab section of the GRE if nothing else.

This novel had me weeping by the end. Utterly fantastic. Compelling characters , deeply descriptive, philosophically driven through and through. I couldn’t ask for a better ride.

Some of the writing was sloppy and confusing but the visceral violence and gore made up for it. As a lifelong horror reader I don't flinch easily, but Nick Cutter manages it. I really enjoyed this book despite its weaknesses.

The overall theme felt grander than you and I, it was a really good book and really had your skin crawling at some of the characters.
