About this audiobook
Set in the eccentric backwater of Karakarook (pop. 1374) New South Wales, this is the story of Douglas Cheeseman, a shy and clumsy engineer with jug-ears who meets Harley Savage, a woman who is known for being rather large and abrupt.
Douglas is there to pull down a quaint old bridge and Harley aims to foster heritage. They are clearly on a collision course - but when they meet they are unaware that something unexpected is going to happen...

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A beautifully written and evocative story. The characters are both flawed and colourful and the narration is excellent.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Sharp as a knife. Grenville's characters are portrayed with clarity and occasional cruelty. Life in a small town, insecurities, personalities and personal historiesall are brought into focus.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Terrible narration, spoiled the book for me. Don't listen, read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent book and very well read, I enjoyed it tremendously
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Loved getting inside the heads of this group of quirky characters and would have enjoyed seeing further into their stories.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Subtle, reticent, but filled with superfluous flights of whimsy and way too light on actual substance for my liking.
Despite its length it managed to leave two key plot questions unanswered: who or what caused the fire in Freddy Chang’s butcher shop, and just what became of Freddy himself? Perhaps I fell asleep during that part.
