- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I read this book while I was a Mary Kay consultant, and enjoyed learning more about the company culture. I found the principles could apply in other areas as well, though. Eventhough I'm not longer involved in the business side of Mary Kay, I've held onto the book as one to refer back to sometime.

Underwood is not an Mary Kay employee but he was so impressed with her company that he carefully studied it and came up with 9 simple, common sense points that characterize her success. Mary Kay was the precursor to value-based leadership.

It's an indepth look into a business plan that will cause most managers to say "that just can't work", however Mary Kay Inc has proved that it can. It is a must-read for all people in management positions.Jim Underwood is an award winning author who has written for the New York Times, and the Wallstreet Journal, among other publications. His accolades are great, and many. He was also the first "outside" author to have full access to the Mary Kay Inc staff, to hear and record their stories in a book that was not published by and for Mary Kay Inc.
