About this audiobook

In an Edenic future, a girl and her father live close to the land in the shadow of a lone mountain. They possess a few remnants of civilization: some books, a pane of glass, a set of flint and steel, a comb. The father teaches the girl how to fish and hunt, the secrets of the seasons and the stars. He is preparing her for an adulthood in harmony with nature, for they are the last of humankind. But when the girl finds herself alone in an unknown landscape, it is a bear that will lead her back home through a vast wilderness that offers the greatest lessons of all, if she can only learn to listen.

A cautionary tale of human fragility, of love and loss, The Bear is a stunning tribute to the beauty of nature's dominion.

This is a book you need to be in the right headspace for. And I was most definitely not in the mood. The book is allegorical in nature, and nothing really happens. I did not care for the girl or her father, and when the titular bear finally shows up, nothing happens either.

The narrator of this audiobook annoyed me to no end with his uneven pacing and constant breathing (?!?!), where sometimes it was the only I could pay attention to.

Essential reading for those who wish to listen to the longing within themselves to return to the wild.

What an amazing tale of death and moving forward from it. It was a much needed read after a family passing.

I love it. It makes you realize how insignificant humans are. A reminder like this book is great for humility. Hopefully, what we take away from this is that we should treasure our families, the life we have now, and to be more in tuned with the environment and all the other creatures living on this marble. I can definitely see myself relistening/rereading this in a few years.

Beautifully written. A heartbreaking story that dramatizes the place of human beings in the natural world.
