About this audiobook

New York Times bestselling author Lorraine Heath continues her Once Upon a Dukedom series with this lush love story of a duke who discovers what he desires in a wife may not be what he needs…

Hugh Brinsley-Norton, the Duke of Kingsland, is in need of a duchess. However, restoring the dukedom—left in ruins by his father—to its former glory demands all his time, with little room for sentiment. He places an advert encouraging the single ladies of the ton to write why they should be the one chosen, and leaves it to his efficient secretary to select his future wife.

If there exists a more unpleasant task in the world than deciding who is to marry the man you love, Penelope Pettypeace certainly can’t imagine what it might be. Still, she is determined to find the perfect bride for her clueless, yet ruthlessly charming employer.

But when an anonymous note threatens to reveal truths best hidden, Kingsland has no choice but to confront the danger with Penelope at his side. Beguiled by the strong-willed, courageous beauty, he realizes he’s willing to risk everything, including his heart, to keep her safe within his arms. Could it be the duchess he’s hunting for has been in front of him all along?

Author

Lorraine Heath

Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. When she read a romance novel, she not only became hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She’s been writing about them ever since. Her novels have been recognized with numerous industry awards and have appeared on the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists.

This book is darned near perfect. The narrator, Kate Reading, is one of my all-time favorites. The pacing is good, the writing is good, the premise is wonderfully angsty, somehow without being too angsty (I have a very low tolerant for angst) because the character development and love development is clear all the way through. The plot is interesting and well fleshed out. The hero and heroine are both very smart and lovable without being too perfect. The side characters are wonderful and add to the plot (as opposed to being there for decoration) without getting in the way. Even the characters that likely will be the stars of future books are unobtrusive, which is rare. Usually they feel like an advertisement in the middle of the book, but these were well done. The conflict and resolution are believable. And the ending is probably the most romantic I've ever read - and I've been reading historical romances for over 40 years. It gave me chills and filled my heart to bursting.

Penelope and Hugh were an interesting couple. Both so strong and so smart and self sufficient, finding each other and falling in love but not knowing they are meant for each other until it's almost too late. I liked her influence on Lord Lawrence as well

One of the best HR I've read in the past few years. The relationship was earned and real. The plot was substantial and never lagged. And the last sentences if the epilogue was incredibly moving.

I enjoyed this entertaining Victorian romance with engaging characters and a suspenseful plot.

Slow start, seems a bit forced, hard to see the romance then about chapter 10 the connection clicks in. And it's unputdownable and the thriller ending genuinely had me worried about the HEA. Very satisfying. Spicy bits good too and push story forward. Couple well matched.
