About this audiobook
He's one of its most prominent citizens.
Neither wants much to do with the other.
At first.
1875. When Kathryn Walsh arrives in tiny Calvada, a mining town nestled in the Sierra Nevadas, falling in love is the furthest thing from her mind. Banished from Boston by her wealthy stepfather, she has come to claim an inheritance from the uncle she never knew: a defunct newspaper office on a main street overflowing with brothels and saloons, and a seemingly worthless mine. Moved by the oppression of the local miners and their families, Kathryn decides to relaunch her uncle’s newspaper?and then finds herself in the middle of a maelstrom, pitted against Calvada’s most powerful men. But Kathryn intends to continue to say?and publish?whatever she pleases, especially when she knows she’s right.
Matthias Beck, owner of a local saloon and hotel, has a special interest in the new lady in town. He instantly recognizes C. T. Walsh’s same tenacity in the beautiful and outspoken redhead?and knows all too well how dangerous that family trait can be. While Kathryn may be right about Calvada’s problems, her righteousness could also get her killed. But when the handsome hotelier keeps finding himself on the same side of the issues as the opinionated Miss Walsh, Matthias’s restless search for purpose becomes all about answering the call of his heart.
Everyone may be looking to strike it rich in this lawless boomtown, but it’s a love more precious than gold that will ultimately save them all.

I would give it 5 stars, but that will be for the narration only. The story itself was disappointing, seeing as it came from the pen of Francine Rivers. Read like a Hallmark movie, same old , same old! The Bible is mentioned but Christian conviction lacks. Won’t recommend it, and I’ve read every Francine Rivers book.1 person found this helpful

While this book was well-written and quite engaging, it lacks the usual resounding spiritual message I have come to associate with Francine Rivers. I enjoyed meeting the characters, learning of their challenges, and hearing about their development and internal growth, but the book didn't inspire ME to grow. That inspiration is something I have come to expect from this author. That's why I gave it four stars. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

If you like Christian romance books, you would like this novel. It really keeps your interest in the characters, I found myself not just waiting for the romance to spark but wanted to see what would happen next to everyone. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Great read if you like historical Christian fiction. There wasn’t a huge Christian theme other than in the way the main character conducted herself and didn’t succumb to the surroundings she was in. It’s the old west where women have few rights and men are completely in control. Liked the ending and seeing the leading character staying strong to who she is. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

It was fast enough moving to be interesting, but not too complicated so I could follow it. Also, I was challenged by the main character to be a woman who stands up for justice and truth in an unstuffy way!! - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

As a stalwart fan of Francine Rivers, I’m disappointed to say this book is not up to the standard of her usual excellence. The story didn’t get started until the 10th chapter. It lacked the usual depth in its characters and spiritual journey. I was surprised by the use of implied foul language, as well as sexually suggestive content.
Compared to average Christian fiction, this is fine. But as Francine Rivers has traditionally set her bar well above average, this book unfortunately comes in well below her norm. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

Definitely not like her old books. I always felt that Francine Rivers paved the way for new and exciting fiction. This book was good but very predictable and I felt like I’d read the story before. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

Picked up from the library because I thought it was set in Nevada. Nope - was actually in California, close to Truckee, and quite good. Spinster lady inherits her uncle's mine & sets about taking care of it - and her late uncle's newspaper all on her own with novel methods.1 person found this helpful

Not exactly Rivers usual quality but still an amazing read/listen (I would recommend reading as I found it hard to understand everything that was going on from listening-but that’s just my preference ?),
I enjoyed this book very very much.

This story, set in a mining town in 1875, is about Kathryn Walsh, a Christian lady from Boston, whose step-father wants her sent far away so she can’t embarrass the family with her crazy ideas about women’s suffrage. Her mother inherits a house/disused newspaper office from Kathryn’s father’s brother - Uncle City Walsh - out west. She gives it to Kathryn and sends her to the remote mining town of Calvada to claim it. There, she meets the two most powerful and wealthy men in Calvada. One is determined to marry her, and the other begrudgingly feels an obligation to protect her because of his friendship with her Uncle City. Kathryn never met City - or her father who had gone west with City and died before Kathryn’s birth. Kathryn soon learns that another newspaper serves up the news in Calvada now. Her Uncle’s house is a mess. She has inherited a worthless mine that isn’t being worked. And there are not many opportunities for women in terms of work in Calvada - unless you count the brothel. Kathryn does make a few friends, though, and when she decides to start her Uncle’s newspaper back up, she find herself in the middle of mining town politics - not a pretty place to be for a lady… - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

This is the first time I have read a book by F. Rivers, and I did so per my daughter's suggestion. I am very impressed with how Rivers digs deep into the inner chambers of her characters without weighing down the story. The pacing is excellent and the story a satisfying read. My next read will be another from this author.2 people found this helpful

Delve into the joys and hardships of life in pop up mining towns of northern California. Francine Rivers enlivens the history and characters as she explores the intent and purpose of adventurous individuals who find themselves abiding in these rugged, loosely organized communities that sprang up wherever gold, silver and copper were discovered, mined and encountered.1 person found this helpful

I absolutely loved this story. It’s not super religious. It’s just a story of a very feisty, determined young lady, who is determined to make her way in a man’s world.
And she does so with Grace, and such a wonderful out maneuvering of men, but then also still respecting them.1 person found this helpful

Title: The Lady’s Mine
Author: Francine Rivers
Pages: 464
Year: 2022
Publisher: Tyndale
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
The Lady’s Mine tells the story of a young woman named Kathryn Walsh who is sent away by her stepfather because of her choices that tend to push the propriety of the time she lives in. Her mother inherited property and a mine in Colorado that she signed over to Kathryn prior to her leaving home. So, armed with nothing more than her belongings and wits Kathryn comes to a town named Calvada, where the population of women is quite small compared to men. With the aid of a few townsfolk, Kathyrn gets acquainted with her inheritance of a newspaper and a mine. However, there is also a man who wants to take from her all that she owns and force her into marriage for his own interests.
Matthias Beck is a local who owns a saloon and hotel, but he isn’t like the other men in town. Matthias was a friend of Kathryn’s uncle and longs to help her understand the danger she faces in a mining town. Matthias’s heart is in the right place but some of his approaches to Kathryn are rebuffed until they both begin to understand what their hearts are telling them. The very act of marriage they have both sworn off might not be so easily held but that doesn’t stop the sparks between them from flying!
There are other background characters that steal the heart of readers such as Scribe, who knew and worked for Kathryn’s uncle. Scribe is a young man who, like the other men in town, fancies himself in love with Kathryn but comes to understand that their bond is more like family than anything else. The café owner, Ronya, who took to running a café to provide for herself after the death of her husband. Ronya has a heart of gold and loves to play matchmaker with Matthias and Kathryn.
Morgan Sanders believes himself to be the king of the land and oppresses many of the miners who work for him. Morgan sets his sights on conquering Kathryn regardless of her protests or actions, but Kathryn’s heart already belongs to another even if she won’t readily admit the truth to herself.
The story is rich with faith, romance, mystery, and a plethora of characters that bring the untamed west to life! I highly encourage readers to enjoy the book and let others know of a superb tale that is guaranteed to touch the heart!
