Bestselling NZ author Danielle Hawkins lives on a sheep and beef farm near Otorohanga with her husband and two children. I was hoping for something more substantial than the fluff this turned out to be, but with quirky characters, a small town setting and an uncomplicated storyline, "The Pretty Delicious Cafe" helped wile away a few hours on a cold, winter's day.

Lia and her friend Anna run a cafe they restored themselves in a small seaside town in New Zealand. Lia has an ex who won't believe its over, and Anna is about to marry Lia's twin brother. The story opens with Lia, who lives alone, reading a very scary book about a psychopath called 'Run, Bobby, Run'. When a stranger taps on her window at midnight, Lia 'screamed like a banshee'. The stranger just has a flat tyre, but then Lia's twin turns up waving a shotgun and wearing nothing but pink satin pyjama shorts. The twins psychic connection has told him that she is in danger, but the stranger, Jed Dixon, is the town's new mechanic and a potential new love interest for Lia. However, Jed has his own issues, and a wife and child are one of them. An enjoyable and quirky story of friendship, humour, family, hard work and eccentric characters mixed with a dash of romance and a love of baking. Some unexpected plot twists make this a great read. Really enjoyed.
