- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5There are a couple of big changes in Mika's life. She's started middle school and her mother is diagnosed with melanoma cancer. Mr. Vann is her enthusiastic and zany math teacher who has his students keep math journals. Mika uses her math journal assignments to figure out (pun intended) how to deal with her mother's struggle with cancer. Math concepts are the chapter titles (estimation, measurement, real and rational numbers, etc.) and often tie into the question of Life. Mika's journal illustrations enliven the work and even clarify those math concepts for readers.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book shows Mika going through many problems like many kids do, that why I think this is a good book for many classrooms. Specifically in the math world though, I love the introduction of math journals and plan on adding them to my own classroom.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I was surprised at the amount of diversity that was described in this book. The first chapter book I had ever heard of that incorporated math. The book seemed relatively heavy due to the topics discussed, but I think these hard conversations are important for students to learning and discuss in a more professional context.
