These first two are throughly entertaining, it makes all the difference to have an author versed in military tactical descriptions when playing out the enemy engagements. I love all the references to nerd fun, Leroy jenkins, and pseudo current names, sargon.
will say that having a main female character in a combat story role has been done and failed many times in my opinion. To many times she is represented with male strengths to make her a strong character and it just doesn't work, such has having a female punching a male across the room as if that will be satifying to see and not so ridiculous an event you role your eyes. Bao is done so well. She has a female personal strength, and physically she's not presented in an unrealistic fashion. The fight scene was so well done, taking in the reality that she will be physically weaker than a male opponent and must find clever ways to overcome that opponent.
