This is a set of stories I want to share with others. It is Tolstoy at his most profound because his theme is the most profound, and also touches most closely to his heart and the message he most wants to share. He brings out these themes in his longer works at once more deeply but also more obliquely. These short stories give us a condensed version of his heart message.
