Lev Tolstoj (09/09/1828-20/11/1910) è stato uno scrittore, filosofo, educatore e attivista sociale russo. Divenuto celebre in patria grazie a una serie di racconti giovanili sulla realtà della guerra, acquisì risonanza mondiale grazie al successo dei romanzi Guerra e Pace (1869) e Anna Karenina (1877), a cui seguirono altre opere narrative sempre più rivolte all'introspezione dei personaggi e alla riflessione morale.
