About this audiobook
From Victorian London to the vibrant port cities of England and France, from gracious stately homes in Gloucestershire to the decadence of Paris, Master of his Fate launches an unforgettable new historical series.
London 1884: Queen Victoria is Empress of India and Britain is at its peak of worldwide power.
James Falconer works as a barrow boy in a flourishing London market owned by Henry Malvern. But James hungers for more. Turning away from family tradition, he dreams of building an empire of stores like Fortnum and Mason’s and believes that Henry, along with his daughter and heir Alexis, could offer him a way to climb beyond his beginnings.
But tragedy and betrayal threaten the dreams of both James and Alexis – and jeopardise everything they hold dear…

Reviews for Master of His Fate

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was well written. I was glad for the list of characters in the front to help me keep them straight. I hope to read more in the series.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was an OK book. Somewhat superficial, not very deep and some loose ends that weren't tied up.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Master of His Fate is a story that takes place in Elizabethan England. It has several characters each with his or her own story. Eventually some of the characters' lives intertwine. The problem is that many questions go unanswered which makes the reader wonder why these incidents even happened. The book gets a good solid three stars because of the unanswered questions.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Thank you to St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this intriguing historical novel set in the Victorian period. This is my first Bradford, so I have nothing to compare this to in terms of her "usual" fare. That being said, I enjoyed it immensely. It needs just a touch of polish to clean up a typo here and there, but overall it was very well done. I had certain expectations that were not met, which is not necessarily a bad thing in this case. After finishing this story and reading that this is to be a quartet, this certainly feels more like a prequel to what may be the bones of the overall story. It laid out the pieces and set a foundation for what is to come. I am absolutely interested in the future of these characters and resolution to some of the unanswered questions that remain. I appreciate that though the Ripper Murders are mentioned, they are only a topical piece of minutae and not a focus as is the case with most Victorian novels. I will be reading the next installment when it becomes available, and feel that a casual reader of historical fiction will be satisfied by this start to a new series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Barbara Taylor Bradford is amazing. She takes a time that is so far into history and brings it to life. As a fan of hers, I know that when I pick up one of her amazing books I will be taken back in time to a land that I am not familiar with, customs that are not known to me, and a way of life that I’ve only heard about in a history lesson. Her books are the best history lessons I have ever read. I can picture the horse drawn carriages, the esteemed houses lit up by gas lights, the beautiful corset style dresses, and the rest of the wonders of the era. I loved how involved James’ grandparents were in his life. They let him live while giving him the knowledge, the support, and once in a while a shove in the right direction to make his dreams come true. James’ knows what he wants to do and while he is not from a wealthy family he is taught manners and is educated to make it possible for him to reach his goal of being “Prince Merchant” for Malvern’s. I would put Master of His Fates in the categories of historical fiction, women’s fiction with the twist of romance and suspense. All of the above categories are ones that I look to when I am in need of a book to read. Barbara Taylor Bradford does an amazing job of weaving together the storylines, making them come together seamlessly, and pulling the reader in.
