Edgar Rice Burroughs

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is the creator of Tarzan, one of the most popular fictional characters of all time, and John Carter, hero of the Barsoom science fiction series. Burroughs was a prolific author, writing almost 70 books before his death in 1950, and was one of the first authors to popularize a character across multiple media, as he did with Tarzan’s appearance in comic strips, movies, and merchandise. Residing in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, Burroughs was drawn into the Second World War and became one of the oldest war correspondents at the time. Edgar Rice Burroughs’s popularity continues to be memorialized through the community of Tarzana, California, which is named after the ranch he owned in the area, and through the Burrough crater on Mars, which was named in his honour.

As reported by my husband, this book is racist and sexist. He read all the previous books, but this one proved too much. Yes, we know how times have changed - I am reporting his comments here.

In which Tarzan makes some German's really suffer (it is WWI) and adventures in the trackless depths of Africa to find another lost city.

Onne of his earlier novels, ERB keeps the reader entertained, and provides us with a city of idiots. Not one to b e denied imagination though it tampers with the author's credulity, he has us visit a city of gold and exquisite art stuck in the middle of the African jungle. The citizens of the city worship parrots, and I think someone ought to give Burrough's the bird.

What a story, it has a large story arc. You can't beat Tarzan.

Quite a bit longer than the previous six books, but thoroughly enjoyable. I really loved the supporting characters in this book. The English officer and the German spy made for a very interesting dynamic. The city of the lunatics was a bit strange, but still well defined and gave you a real sense if creepiness as you read it.
