The perils of door-to-door salesmen kickstart this issue, with a clever cover design inspired by Schiaparelli and created by favouredillustrator Petrov. “They turn your front doorstep into a shop counter,” columnist Mary Carruthers exclaims, adding, “they want to sell you anything from a block of camphor to a vacuum cleaner”. More pages celebrated the heroes of World War II (including a special section on page 38 titled “Women also serve!”), while concern for missing “popular society girl” Lucy Brown Craig, 19, led her parents, “convinced she is being held somewhere against her will,” to beg to print her picture in the hope for clues. With so much happening, little wonder The Homemaker section offers tips for those having trouble sleeping (as well as a beauty routine to incorporate into the hours of slumber). A small glass of warm milk at 9.30pm is recommended plus a black sleep mask and regular lights out before 11pm. Meanwhile, over in The Movie World pages, rising star John Garfield tells writer Barbara Bourchier he’ll leave Hollywood “if I feel all of this is going to my head”.
