Steve Reed MP, the Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, recently announced during an interview with The Times that Labour would ban trail hunting and drag hunting in the first term of a Labour government. These are the very activities that Labour – along with organisations such as the RSPCA – promoted as an alternative to traditional hunting to ensure the future of hounds and hunting communities.
In response, the Countryside Alliance has made it clear that Labour should not be targeting the trail-hunting community and should, instead, be prioritising issues that really have an impact on voters. People in the countryside are desperately concerned about issues such as affordable housing, access to services and the effects of rural crime. Despite this, Labour appears to be following the narrow agenda of those in the party that are still obsessed about hunting, even after more than 700 hours of Parliamentary time was spent creating the legislation that makes it illegal to carry out
