THE odds were heavily stacked against her when she was born at just 22 weeks and four days, weighing just 515g – a little more than a brick of butter. Doctors didn’t think she’d survive and her parents were told to prepare for the worst.

But a lot has changed in the years that followed. Allegra Lategan is 12 now – and in her first year of high school.

The little girl made national headlines in 2011 as the most premature baby in South Africa to survive and her parents, Chantal and Hennie (both 42), are delighted by the strides she’s made.
