Billing error: residents vow to fight back

BACK CHARGES for water

eThekwini residents who have been slapped with exorbitant water bills with back charges for ‘free’ water and sanitation for three years, are adamant they will not foot the bill for the municipalities administrative bungle.

In December, more than 50 000 residents received utility bills showing they had back charges for water and sanitation from 2020 to 2023.

The affected residents were given free water on the premise that their properties were valued at R250 000 or lower.

Desmond Willie, 52, of Woodhurst, said: “I am a new home owner and paid the transfer costs of about R4 000 for my property in June 2023.

“In November last year, my bill was averaging between R2 800 and R3 500.”
