His piece is most welcome in the wake of an editorial in which ‘rural campaigners’ were urged to drop their ‘kneejerk opposition’ to new power infrastructure (). There is a genuine risk that we will lose vast tracts of fertile soil and beautiful landscapes in the rush towards renewables. Solar installations in particular take up acres of land. Let’s push for them to go on brownfield sites, rooftops and car parks, not high-grade farmland, as will the proposed 2,000-acre solar plant that would carve up the Bedford-shire and Cambridgeshire country-side on my doorstep, not to mention the countless other schemes in the pipeline poised to do exactly the same across our ‘green and pleasant land’.
