Dance of the rhino

In August 2023, to celebrate my birthday, I spent a few days in Mabalingwe Nature Reserve near Bela-Bela.We had wonderful wildlife sightings, but the highlight was this interaction between a group of white rhino at a waterhole.

Everything was calm when we arrived, but soon a young rhino bull started to pick a fight with a cow and her calf. For more than three hours, the bull charged at the other rhinos. Every time, the cow drove him back with her calf at her side. After each attack, the bull would bask in the sun or cool down in the mud as if nothing had happened… Only to charge again 10 minutes later.
