Around 150 years ago, sugar was only eaten by the aristocracy and by royalty. It was a precious commodity, and people would only eat about a kilogram a year. But then the UK Government started to subsidise the sugar industry and now sugar is everywhere. The average Brit now consumes 120 pounds of sugar a year. Can you imagine what that does to your body? And it’s worse for children as they can often be consuming double their weight in sugar a year – often because it’s hidden in foods and because parents use it as a treat.
