Outdoor elegance AT ITS BEST

WHO LIVES HERE?

Rial Visagie and Daniel Swanepoel

WHERE Robertson, Western Cape

On the historic Clairvaux wine farm outside Robertson, summer days with temperatures reaching more than 45°C are not unheard of. A place to kick back and relax was therefore essential in mid-summer. That’s exactly what Rial and Daniel had in mind when they renovated the old cement dam next to the homestead, reducing its size to make way for a large stoep, braai area and outdoor entertaining space.

The old outbuilding with its changing rooms was enlarged to a spacious 74m² and has been fully equipped with a kitchen, bar and lounge. “We love entertaining and celebrating life, so we wanted to create a comfy space where we could hang out with friends and family in an unpretentious way,” says Daniel.

As huge fans of mid-century modern architecture, Rial and Daniel decided on simple lines. A long narrow window makes the most of the surroundings in the background and the Langeberg mountains beyond. “No painting could tell a better story of where you are than that window,” insists Rial.
