Like pasta in Italy or sauerkraut in Germany, marog is uniquely and traditionally an African staple food.
What can be confusing, is that the word ‘marog’, which means ‘green leafy vegetable’ in Setswana and Sesotho, is often used as a generic term for the young, green leaves of any leafy plant that can be cooked up, like spinach.
However, there seems to be general consensus that marog is any of several edible plants of species that tends to grow as an annual weed alongside the road and in open spaces.
