THE AYRSHIRE coast is not an obvious pit stop when heading north. Once past Carlisle you must make a definitive left turn and drive for another couple of hours until the sea hoves into view. But that is what gives Turnberry an edge over other similar establishments: when you arrive at this sporting Mecca, perched up on an old railway escarpment overlooking the Firth of Clyde, you are at a destination.
