A CARGO ship has swopped its traditional fabric sails for two WindWings – high-tech sails made of steel and fibreglass that drastically cut fuel consumption. Pyxis Ocean, the first vessel to be fitted with WindWings, recently embarked on its maiden voyage from China to Brazil with the innovative new technology.
The large wing sails, measuring up to 37,5 metres in height, are fitted to the deck of cargo ships to harness the power of wind.
The sails can generate just under half the energy needed to propel the ship and the creators of the technology hope that it’ll eventually be possible to combine wind technology with alternative fuel sources that are better for the planet than traditional fuel.
Because wind is an endless resource, this technology is promising for the future of the freight shipping industry and its plans to be more
