Sylvia Wigham [13 June letters] is certainly not the only owner of an ancient Singer hand-operated sewing machine! I acquired a Singer from a friend’s 90-year-old mother. I used it for many years and often did clothing alterations for my mother-in-law, thinking she didn’t have a machine herself.
