read your article on ‘wacky races’ [16 August], and here in Devon we have a really wacky one – worm charming. It’s held in the village of Blackawton in May. Each team gets a pitch and has to encourage and catch as many worms as possible in a set time. Artificial encouragement is banned (soapy water being one), but stamping your feet on the ground makes the worms think it’s raining and pop up – well, that’s the idea anyway.
